1. Sheep (They)
“They never have to make any decisions, he thought. Maybe that’s why they always stay close to me. ”（Coelho 7).
Sheep symbolize submissiveness in obedience, they are dependent on the boy and have no ideas of their own.

2. The Boy's Jacket
“Because he had the jacket, he had withstood the cold of the dawn. We have to be prepared for change, he thought, and he was grateful for the jacket’s weight and warmth. The jacket had a purpose, and so did the boy. ”(Coelho 8).
The jacket symbolizes his purpose and journey. The boy uses the jacket in different places, and each change of purpose signifies the development of his life and story.

3. Butterfly
“As the boy converses with the old king, "a butterfly appeared and fluttered between him and the old man.”(Coelho 30).
The butterfly symbolizes transformation , meaning that the boy will change over time, like a caterpillar breaking out of its cocoon into a butterfly.

4. Urim and Thummim
“They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies ‘yes,’ and the white ‘no.’ When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so. Always ask an objective question.”(Coelho 31).
They are a black stone and a white stone, respectively. These two stones were given to Santiago by Melchizedek, and they symbolize Melchizedek's blessing and foreshadowing of the boy's destiny.

One day, while herding sheep, he had a recurring dream of hidden treasures in the pyramids of Egypt. He was very confused about this, so he found a gypsy trying to interpret his dream. The gypsy woman interpreted this dream as a sign that the boy should embark on a journey to find treasure, that is, to Egypt. However, the boy hesitated to leave the shepherd and the comfortable life of the sheep. At the same time, he also admired the daughter of a businessman.
