The ethical mind exists in all aspects of life; work and home. It is influenced by a number of factors, including what Gardner calls vertical support and horizontal support. Vertical support starts in the home with examples from adults. Horizontal supports are those interactions with peers that help shape the ethical mind of a person.

I don't want to be a different person in my work life than I am in my personal life. The manner in which I carry myself from an ethical standpoint should be consistent in all areas of my life.

In my line of work, I have to be prepared to tackle ethical questions daily--when coaching teachers and program specialists; when interacting with families; and when interacting with students. I have always operated from a perspective that ethical decisions are the ones you make when no one is watching; ethics is a measure of a person's character. It is important to remain true to yourself and your values and to recognize that the easiest path is not necessarily the ethical one.
