A few of my fundamental core beliefs about children are resilience, self-respect, integrity, and a strong work ethic. Although these can be indicative of elementary-age children, I believe that they are central to middle and high school students for many reasons. The environment and circumstances that most of them face make these core beliefs very important for them to hold on to. The many obstacles of being a teenager and thriving academically call for middle and high school age students to show resilience, learn to respect themselves, have integrity and be able to demonstrate a strong will to get the work done.

School Counselor Competency Results Reflection

My School Counselor Competency Assessment results reflect as they should. I am new to the school counselor field of study and, of course, there is a lot for me to learn. I identify comfortably with the mindsets section of the assessment more than any other. Even outside of being a school counselor (or studying to be a school counselor) I agree with and hold each of them to be true. There are a few of the planning and assessment that I am comfortable or knowledgeable in as well. Although I have no current experience as a school counselor, I have worked in education for some time and have had to collaborate with other stakeholders on tasks outlined in that area. There is a lot for me to learn and take in as I matriculate through this program and I am confident that as I continue on, I will become more familiar and more knowledgeable of these competencies. I enjoyed reading through and rating myself on the competencies because I will have the opportunity to look back at this assessment and compare my knowledge from beginning to end.

Areas of competence:

As previously mentioned, my area of most competency is mindsets. I believe that this area holds what should be common beliefs and attitudes that counselors should innately possess for their students.

Areas of improvement:

Because I don’t have any formal experience with being a school counselor, I believe that all areas of behaviors are areas of improvement for me. While I have worked alongside school counselors in previous roles, I have not been able to perform or take part in implementing any of these competencies. I am very intrigued and ready to learn more about each competency and how it is demonstrated within the school counselor realm

Reflection of IAT

I found my results interesting about preferring African Americans over European Americans. I am African American, and I understand that I am biased when it comes to my people. I believe that some people may look at these results and find a reason to nitpick about my slight automatic preference for AA. But I believe that it is understood that any one race will prefer their own over another.

My second test consisted of identifying pictures of President Joe Biden and President Abraham Lincoln. Those results indicate that I have no automatic preference between the two which is understandable. I am not partial to either president. Although I do like President Biden (in some ways) I am not particularly drawn to him over Honest Abe. Had there been a different match for President Biden, then maybe the results who say differently.
