Depression is one of the most popular disorders in the world. Worldwide 350 million people are affected by this mental illness. In Germany 4.1 millions suffer from depression which means, that five percent of the adults between 18 and 65 are affected.
Twice as many women as men had or have to deal with this kind of disorder. Therefore women are more often affected.
Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy.
It's a hard illness which often is life-threatening.
Eventhough almost half of the suicides in Germany are caused by depressions, this disorder is often underrated.
There are three different kinds of degrees of severity; mild, moderate and severe depressions.
General symptoms are for example the feeling of being sad, hopeless, tired and having anxiety or even sleep issues.
But also inner restlessness, the loss of appetite or physical pain like stomach pain or head aches can be a sign of depression.
People who are affected by a harder form can also get suicidal tendencies by the thought of not being worth it and not being (good) enough. People who they see their lives as worthless often see a chance of relief in death.

In gemany about 2 million people suffer from OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder).
According to statistics men and women are both affected with it in the same way.

Symptoms of this compulsive illness are compulsive- thoughts, fears, impulses and actions.

For those who can't imagine what this should mean. I`ll give you an example:
A compulsive thought could be: "In the next exam, I'll fail and I'll go crazy".
A compulsive fear: " I haven't changed my band-Aid yet, I might get an infection!"
"I'll crash my car into a bridge.", could be a compulsive impulse.
And an example for a compulsive action is: "I have to change my band-Aid over and over again and wash my hands."

The most common type of a compulsive action is looking for a door or a window to be closed or to clean the hands many times to prevent infections.

A kind of OCD you all know is the compulsive action to always get into thought spirals, putting you further and further into a world of thoughts. It is not possible to get out of these thought spirals, because you have no control over your thoughts. Which means you are trapped in your own thoughts and body.

To prevent having compulsive actions you can take pills and go to therapy to talk about your problems and experiences.

In 2019 in Germany about 5000 people suffered from a burnout, more women than men.
Burnout is a form of depression. In German it means "ausbrennen", which describes the disease quite good.

People are dealing with exhaustion, sleep disturbances, high blood pressure and heartrythm disturbances.
Almost every case of Burnout is caused by negative stress. Negative stress for example is an expression for stress which you get through an upcoming exam, an overwhelming amount of work or many appointments but less time for yourself.

When feeling bad many people take cigarettes, sweets or alcohol, which might even help for a short time. But after this time the body gets addicted to them and it will quickly become worse.
Through cigarettes, sweets and alcohol you get sleepless, which supresses healing and leads to even more lack of energy. Thats how the spiral is twisting more and more until the "system" explodes- burnout.

This mental illness is also treatable. In therapy you can learn how to turn down your entitlements and anxiety.
A chance to not give Burnout a chance in affecting you is to do regular sport. This will help your body to dismantle your stresshormons.

At the same time you could tell them what they could to for you to feel better.
We have already learned the H.E.A.R.T.- method, which is very helpful when it comes to a situation someone tells you their problems.
To summarize the H.E.A.R.T.-method:
H ear
E mpathize
A pologize
R esponse
T hank
For those who don't want to talk about their problems with friend or families are other help is available (e.g. hotlines, websites). You can write with a person who might help you feeling better.
A professionell way of help is therapy. Many people are in an ambulance or stationary treatment.
But due to an enormous deficiency of available therapy stations many people can't get help or have to wait a long time to get some.
I already gave an example in the beginning of the padlet why this shouldn't stay like this.

Mental health is a taboo in our society that is talked about far too little, although mental health is just as important as our physical health. Even if you can't see it you should take care of you and your health. These invisible diseases need to be taken very seriously.
Just imagine you break a leg and want to go to the hospital to fix it and the doctors would say that you have to wait at least six months for surgery or a similar treatment. You may think this is ridiculous, but this is exactly the way how people who suffer from a mental illness are treated if they need help or want to go to therapy.
I hope this example makes clear that there should be no difference between the physical and the mental health when it comes to treatments.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental illnesses in the world. In Germany are living 4.6 million people who are suffering from such a disorder.
Often these are social anxieties or phobias (spiders...).
These illnesses are also more common for the female gender.
A human has an intuitive anxiety, which was very practical thousands of years ago, when we were gathering and hunting. People still get anxious when they see f.e. spiders or snakes because it`s our intuition to do so.
But supernatural fear isn't normal. Adults that have this kind of fear haven't had a primal trust developed in their first years of life.

When growing up in a loved and trustful home, we have reference persons that give us the feeling of a nice and friendly world.
If bad things happen which shock us, we don't get this feeling of trust and love. This forms the basis for anxiety.
Often the people who suffer from anxiety talk about reasons like death, loss or accidents. In today's world more and more people are overwhelmed because of the digital world and the fear of not being able to keep up with the development.

A huge challenge are panic attacks. They express themselves through heart palpitations, for example; hot flushes, anxiety, shaking, sweating, shortness of breath and the fear of dying.
The patients of anxiety can reflect and therefore also change their behaviour.
Through therapy and pills this disorder can be treated.

In Germany there are about 500.000 children and teenagers from the age between 6 and 18 who are affected.
Boys are four times more likely to suffer from ADHD than girls.
The affected ones are hyperactive and inattentive. They are getting distracted easily and have other symptoms like forgetfulness, impatience and impulsiveness.

Children and teenagers often deal with problems in school, because of their aggressions. The distraction triggers many little mistakes in regard to exercises or homework which makes their school-life harder.

Many of you know ADHD (germ. ADHS), but did you know that there is a similar disorder called attention deficit disorder (ADD).

ADD is the contrary of ADHD.
This disease makes children and teenagers stand out because of their physical inactivity.
It is common that affected people are dreamy and forgetful. Often they drift into an "inner world" and forget the time.

ADD- and ADHD-sufferers can't stay focused.
Against these diseases a therapy may help. It includes a structured day, behavior rules and a practice of concentration, attention and control of the impulses.
There are also medicaments available.

Today's school system is very strict and expenses a lot of pressure to the students. They have to learn for exams, do their homework and improve their accomplishments at all times. Many students put themselves under pressure, because they want everything to turn out "perfect".
Through the amount of work school comes with, free time is getting rare.
If you're not made for the system and are not a good student - which doesn't mean anything, because grades don't define you - it can be really hard. For example; shy students that don't want to talk as much get bad grades for not fitting in the system or people who have deficits due to learning disabilities get bad grades for not being "free of mistakes". This also affects the mental health, because it shows that you're not good enough due to constant comparison.
