The earliest memory I have of reading was in first grade. I was 6 years old and I was going down to the school library with my friends. I got down there and picked up Super Fly Guy.

Rats Saw God

The setting of Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas is an office with lots of plants and a 70s feel. The time period is set in the 1990s. The mood of the setting is carefree. The setting is important to the story because it explains his move from Florida to Texas and how he feels about it.

The character trait I chose for Steve York is reckless. Steve shows this trait when he uses drugs in irresponsible ways. He also demonstrates this trait in the story when he speaks to the counselor like a friend with no respect. These pieces of evidence show that Steve is reckless because he knows the consequences and does these things anyway. It shows how careless he is.

The song I chose for Rats Saw God is "Burning Pile" by Mother Mother. In the book, Steve does many bad things for himself, including using drugs. He is quite irresponsible—also, Steve tries many things to get rid of his problems including drinking and smoking. The song connects to the book because in the song it says "It goes, all my troubles on a burning pile
All lit up and I start to smile
If I catch fire then I change my aim
Throw my troubles at the pearly gates." I can see this as describing Steve's high.

2/28 Conflict

The biggest conflict in the story is that he has to write the paper, or else he won't pass his senior year. The conflict is man vs. self because he is the one failing all of his classes because he doesn't try. In the story on page 2, it says, " "And then there are the comments on your report card: 'lacks motivation,' 'doesn't turn in homework,' 'falls asleep in class.' " This proves how bad he does in class.
