He had a student who was already a successful "influencer" and had developed strategies to make money through product marketing. She was down-to-earth and gave short snapshots of her college life. While she was successful now, she realized that her popularity may not continue and was going to finish her education. The interview suggested that, while many students may want to become an influencer, it's not a guarantee

The resource was an article on BBC that shows heavy skepticism to the idea of a "personal brand", the image that a person carefully curates to put forth into society. The main purpose of an online personal brand is to show others an ideal version of yourself that may maximize future prospects, whether it is utilized to get a new job or to sell products.

I mostly agree with the message, although I think the use of personal brands is inevitable and may tie in to society as a whole, not just the professional world. Creating an ideal version of yourself for others to see is to be constantly unsatisfied with yourself in private. It's also true that people have always had their own personal brand; they just haven't always been so easy to access or present to others. The technological advances of the late 2000's, especially the addition of social media, changed this aspect of society so rapidly that we went from one way of self promotion to a completely new way that seems super vain at first. Ultimately, I think creating a personal brand is simply just going to be a necessity of the future. Times have changed.

This was an article on the BBC website, under Worklife. The main message was that we are complex individuals, so we as people should not put a lot of, if any, effort into creating and promoting a “personal brand.” If it is something you are doing, be authentic and don’t make it your main focus. I do agree with this message. The idea of a personal brand seems to train people to think about themselves and others through the lens of capitalism; our self-worth becomes dependent on how well we “sell” ourselves. None of that seems healthy or realistic to me.

How can your digital footprint affect your future opportunities?
If you work hard to create a perfect personal brand online and then you do anything inconsistent with that image, you will attract a lot of criticism. You have to "constantly police yourself."

Do you agree with the message in this resource? Why or why not?
There are two viewpoints in this article. Sandberg believes you should not package/brand yourself because it is inauthentic. Holloway, on the other hand, states that it's okay to highlight your strengths and you can brand yourself authentically by focusing on who you already are rather than creating a fake image. I agree with both that authenticity is important and builds trust with clients/consumers. With my career, I have not had to brand myself online and would not want to deal with the pressure of maintaining a perfect online image, but I understand that it is helpful for many people!

Perhaps one’s social media accounts present a clearer picture of who you are as a person. Granted, when we hire people for a job we want to know that they have the qualifications to fulfill that job and social media may not give us a glimpse into their traditional CV but it may show human resources you are the well-rounded person they want to hire.

Do you agree with the message in this resource?

I do agree with the message in “How Colleges Use Kids' Social Media Feeds” by Caroline Knorr because it is presented from a teaching perspective in the sense that we can learn from our mistakes and there are ways to protect our information while still presenting an accurate representation of ourselves. Her advice includes: Do a social media audit, make accounts private and groom all privacy settings (a good idea in general), a healthy social life is absolutely ok but an unhealthy one that shows questionable antics is not the image any one wants to put forth to employers or colleges, and, lastly, be cognizant about what you post in general on any type of social media (pictures, conversations, likes).
