Nathaniel Gorham

Sixth president

under the

Articles of Confederation

I think Nathaniel Gorham is very interesting. He became a judge though lacked legal training. He attended the Constitutional Convention. With Thomas Jefferson, George Clinton and more he supported the U.S. Constitution. As with some of the other presidents under the A of C, this presidency was just something to add to his long list of accomplishments. Gorham served as a member of the legislature and much more. Gorham career started with public notary. His sister was the the wife of John Leighton who was an ancestor of Theodore Roosevelt’s second wife, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. Nathaniel served from 1786-1787. He died on June 11, 1796. I picked Nathaniel Gorham because of these reasons. Therefore, Gorham has had a long life in politics and I think he deserved to be president.

John Hanson

1st. President of the United States Under the Articles of Confederation

John Hanson wanted to resign from being president the day after he was elected. John was considered the laziest president under the Articles of Confederation. He wouldn’t help at all. The government established a single, uniform currency throughout the states under his mostly powerless watch. The only thing John really helped in when he was President was that he helped establish U.S. Postal Offices and National Banks. Before John was president, he was a merchant and a delegate in the Continental Congress. These are some reasons that made me think of him as a very cool president.

Hancock was President from 1785-1786.Hancock had also helped fund an American effort during the American Revolutionary War.Eventually, Hancock was re-elected the Governor of Massachusetts due to health before he even became President. He even ran against George Washington when the election was under the Constitution, but he didn’t win, obviously.

I think that Cyrus Griffin of Virginia was the best president before The Constitution. I think this because he had been in the federal system even before he became one of our American presidents. Did I mention that he was the LAST president under the A of C. He helped make the Judicial Branch become the modern American court system. After the presidency, he became a judge with the District Court of Virginia.

Before being president, Elias was president of the Continental Congress and he was a United States representative. Elias lived from 1740 - 1821. Elias originally just wanted to be a lawyer but then one of his friends said that Elias should be a Continental Congress delegate. That’s where it all changed for Elias. When Elias was a delegate, another delegate in the Continental Congress said that Elias should run for president of the Continental Congress. Elias got elected president of the Continental Congress. Later on, Elias was elected president under the Articles of Confederation. These are some facts that I have on Elias Boudinot.
