Definition A podcast is a digitally distributed program that may be downloaded via the Internet. An episodic sequence of digital audio or video files, for example, that a user may download to a personal device and listen to at their leisure. Streaming apps and podcasting platforms make it easy to keep track of your own consumption queue across many audio sources and playback devices. Podcast search engines are also available, which assist users in finding and sharing podcast episodes.

A podcast generator keeps a central collection of files on a server that can be accessed via the Internet as a web feed. The listener or viewer accesses this online feed, checks for updates, and downloads any new files in the series using special client application software known as a podcast client, which runs on a computer or media device. This method can be automated to automatically download new files, giving the impression to listeners that podcasters are broadcasting or "pushing" new episodes to them. Podcast files can be downloaded or streamed directly from the user's device. Podcasts can be followed and listened to via a number of different mobile applications. Many of these apps allow users to download podcasts or audiobooks.

Tristan Louis presented the idea of linking sound and video assets to RSS feeds in a draft in October 2000.
Dave Winer, a software developer and originator of the RSS format, put the idea into action.

Podcasting, formerly a fringe technique of disseminating audio content, has evolved into a well-known channel for delivering audio content, whether for business or personal usage. Podcasts are audio files that can be played at the listener's leisure, anytime and anywhere. They are similar to radio programs in format.

iPodderX, created by August Trometer and Ray Slakinski, was the first program to make this technique possible.

By 2007, audio podcasts had done what radio broadcasts had previously accomplished, which had been the source of radio discussion shows and news programs since the 1930s. This shift occurred as a result of the advancement of internet capabilities, as well as improved consumer access to less expensive audio recording and editing technology and software.
In August 2004, Adam Curry launched his show Daily Source Code. It was a show focused on chronicling his everyday life, delivering news, and discussions about the development of podcasting, as well as promoting new and emerging podcasts. Curry published it in an attempt to gain traction in the development of what would come to be known as podcasting and as a means of testing the software outside of a lab setting. The name Daily Source Code was chosen in the hope that it would attract an audience with an interest in technology. Daily Source Code started at a grassroots level of production and was initially directed at podcast developers. As its audience became interested in the format, these developers were inspired to create and produce their own projects and, as a result, they improved the code used to create podcasts. As more people learned how easy it was to produce podcasts, a community of pioneer podcasters.

The most basic equipment for podcasting is a computer and a microphone. It helps to have a soundproof room and headphones. A recording or streaming application should be installed on the computer. A typical microphone for podcasting is connected via USB. If the podcast includes two or more people, each will need a microphone and a USB audio interface to mix them together. If the podcast includes video (live streaming), a separate webcam and additional lighting may be required.
