He was a French Naval Officer and navigator who is known for the wide ranging exploration in the Pacific Ocean tht he conducted in the second half of the 1780's.
La Perouse strit in the North Western Pacific is named after him. this strait sepparates the sea of Okhotsk from the sea of Japan.
