My grandparents Like going to Alaska, and I love when they come back with some fish, mostly, cod. I bet you like cod too. But what if they all got wiped out for good? There would be no more cod! We could never have cod again! Even for holidays. One problem facing our coastal communities is overfishing, you should do something about it. One idea is maybe having a season for fishing. Our marine life is in great danger.

This is a significant problem for our coastal communities, people that fish are taking away more fish than needed, and some of those fish they weren’t even looking for. This is a problem that is endangering our marine life. There is many fish that are at risk, including, “Shrimp, tuna, salmon, and cod are just some of the fish whose populations are at risk of collapsing. There used to be an abundance of fish in the sea. Now fish like cod are often substituted in most commercial fish products,” (“plenty of fish in the sea? Maybe not”). Fish that we all love are at risk of being wiped out, if this happens our holidays and diets will be different. “Eventually overfishing could lead to certain species of fish being wiped out entirely. Shrimp, salmon, cod, tuna and many more could become extinct in less than 30 years,” (“plenty of fish in the sea? Maybe not”). Overfishing is a horrible idea because many fish populations are going down very quickly, and if this continues, there will be no more fish in the sea. “Eventually, overfishing could lead to certain species of fish being wiped out entirely. Shrimp, salmon, cod, tuna, and many more could become extinct in less than 30 years. Overfishing is an emergency that can no longer be ignored,”(“plenty of fish in the sea? Maybe not.”) Overfishing needs to be stopped, people that fish are taking to many fish away from our sea. This is a problem that you have the power to fix.

There are solutions to this problem too. We can make smarter food choices and have catch limits/fishing seasons. “We can make smarter food choices, like only eating sustainable seafood. We can check out the seafood guides and find out what seafood is good for you and the planet,” (“you can help stop overfishing”). This would be a great way to stop overfishing, we need to make smarter food choices that aren’t just good for us, but the planet too. “Some changes to our diets are needed. At the supermarket, think beyond the familiar, favourite fishes; maybe try something more sustainable. Hake, crab, sablefish, mackerel, Pacific sardines and barramundi are all tasty and sustainable alternatives,” (“plenty of fish in the sea? Maybe not”). There are many solutions, and they all are durable. Overfishing is a big problem that needs to be stopped.

Senator Stabenow, I know you love shrimp and cod too. These fish are at stake of being wiped out, there used to be an abundance of fish, if you want to help fix this problem, then you should make legislation to fix overfishing because if you don’t, pretty soon almost all the fish we all know and love will have all disappeared.

Sincerely,

 Abbigayle Harbeck
