As stated in "Wedding Gowns in the 1500s," wedding styles in the 1500s differed dramatically from styles today. Brides did not wear traditional white dresses because it was not common in this time period. Women wore any color dress they preferred or could afford. Many different materials were used to make the dresses but most chose satin fabric. The dress contained large amounts of fabric and the rich brides wore a long train to flaunt their wealth. Many of the dresses were accessorized with ribbons, flowers, jewels, and pearls. Although the dress covered most of the woman's body, most had a low neckline and accessorized with a necklace.

According to "The Courting and Marriage Customs of the 1500s and 1600s," "To marry for love was considered foolish." Marriage was arranged for most and was based on social class and what would be in the family's best interest. The age of consent for a boy was 14 and the age of consent for a girl was 12. The couple did not get to meet very much before the wedding so the soon to be husband received a picture to remember his bride. After the marriage, the man became the woman's legal guardian and gained property of any valuables she owned.

As stated in "More Wedding Customs," Once the two families agree to the marriage there are a few other things they must do before the ceremony. The couple must announce their marriage 3 times on three different Sundays or holy days. Any marriage that wasn't published prior to the wedding was ruled clandestine and illegal. Proper invitations were not sent out. Instead the families either announced to their closer friends and family or sent a letter to inform them. The wedding guests still brought some gifts for the bride and groom and a big feast was served.

According to "More Wedding Customs," "The bride has very few if any bridesmaids in her wedding." The maids help the bride to prepare and get ready for her big day. The bridal procession was very noisy and usually caused a lot of complaints. Along with the bridesmaids, there was musicians to follow. Once everyone was ready, the bridal procession would enter the church. If the groom was not in the procession, he would meet the bride in front of the church and they would walk in together.

"The wedding is always a religious ceremony, conducted by a minister. There was no running off to the justice of peace or in the registry (More Wedding Customs). The words of the ceremony could compare to some in weddings today. The church was always kept open for anyone in the community to attend. The wedding festivities were normally payed for by the bride's father. If not, the community would help out.

"The modern wedding set is unknown, but diamonds were still popular in this time period(The Marriage Ring). The wedding ring was placed on the left ring finger as it still is today. This tradition started with the belief that there was a vein in the ring finger that led to a woman's heart. Some still choose to believe this today. As stated in "The Marriage Ring," " Many wedding sets contained a short inscription of a quote." Wealthy women were almost expected to have a wedding ring. Some women, on the other hand, went their whole lives without a ring because they were so expensive.

As stated in " Elizabethan Wedding Customs," "Women were second class citizens and were expected to marry." Single women were called witches and gained little to no respect from the community. Women were raised to believe they were inferior to men and were totally dominated by male members of their family. Not much changed after they got married, they were the husband's property once married.

"For noble and other propertied families, the most significant part of a wedding day is the signing of the wedding contract, which sets out the terms of dowry, jointure, and other elements for the financial security of both parties (More Wedding Customs). A dowry is what the bride brings to the marriage. Some people refer to it as her marriage portion. This may include money, or property that she owns. The jointure is an agreement by the groom 's family to give the bride certain amounts of money and possessions to the bride if the groom passes before she does, in addition to his will.
