The most notable feature is the neck joint at the 17th fret, instead of the 14th, making this the first full-scale electric guitar.

The Bigsby Travis guitar was created by Paul Bigsby, who is credited as a pioneer of the solid-body electric guitar. This guitar for Merle Travis was a huge milestone. The strings of this guitar were anchored in the body, instead of a tailpiece, and the headstock had all six tuners in a row, marking an influential variation from previous guitar models.

The Gibson Flying V was introduced as having a "futuristic" body style, along with the Explorer and the Moderne. These guitars did not sell well and were discontinued after a year. The Flying V was reintroduced in 1967 after a number of musicians showed interest. The reissue featured some changes, such as in the pickguard and bridge.

The Fender Jazzmaster was primarily designed to appeal to jazz guitarists. It features a contoured, offset waist that is a little more comfortable for seated playing. However, it became much more popular among the surf rock crowd. The unique features include a floating bridge, and pickup overrides, giving the Jazzmaster a different sound than the Stratocaster and Telecaster.

However, Les Paul did not want his name on the new model, so Gibson changed it to the Gibson SG. This guitar features a thinner body and neck, with a double cutaway and a more contoured shape. The SG Standard is currently Gibson's best selling guitar model.

Guitarist Randy Rhoads commissioned a Flying V style guitar from Jackson. It was going to be called The Original SIN, but is now called the Jackson Rhoads. There are a few differences between the Rhoads and the Flying V, such as the longer "hom" resembling a sharks fin, high vibrato, and pickups that capture treble very efficiently
