I think we all strive for this daily. If expectations are clear, I truly believe most students will rise to them even if they initially push back.

 It is the deep engagement that I think we are struggling with at CCG, or at least in my classroom. This is only achieved with about half of the students in each of my classes. I know it is because so many struggle with the material and I used to be able to help them. The past two years, it is difficult to sit with a group and really help them because then behaviors get out of hand. I don't think I am at a place where I can truly help everyone without "losing the room" and chaos ensuing. My focus has been more on behavior management than on reaching the children who struggle and I hate that. What constitutes grade level work?  How can we scaffold lessons so that students can meet developmentally appropriate expectations? Are families willing to partner with us?   What constitutes a legitimate role in decision making?  Why does everyone want to make decisions and no one wants to come tutor? How do we monitor progress?

The problem is when students do not have the requisite skills to perform grade level tasks. This leads to behavior issues which tend to lower teacher expectations. I agree with it. I also agree with the fact that I need to do better to meet the needs of my students. With that being said, lack of trusted, researched based resources exist. I know the county is "working" on that. There just is not enough time in the day for us to comb through resources. The repeating behaviors of several hinder learning for all. It’s incredibly frustrating. I would like for students to take ownership of their learning and push themselves, but this rarely happens. I feel as if I’m doing all the work. On top of that, I’m begging students to turn in work for me.
