I am tutoring a girl in first grade who is very sweet. We first do the alphabet strip, then spell out words, play bingo and read books. She knows all the letters and most of the letter sounds. Her English is very good, and we have complex conversations where she uses various vocabulary words. The challenging part of tutoring is the amount of time. One hour is a long time for a first grader to sit and work. After forty-five minutes, she gets antsy, seems bored, and wants to go back to her normal class setting. The second time I went, she was so excited to see me and ran and hugged me, which made me feel really good. I am very happy I have this opportunity, and I have enjoyed my time tutoring so far.

I am concerned about him sitting still, but I think if I incorporate interactive, exciting activities, my student won't even feel like he is working. She was not very fluent in English and had quite a hard time doing some of the things we did like the ABCs and reading. The second week I went, my student was there and he was amazing. He did very good with our ABCs and when we read, he was very engaged. It surprised me because he was more fluent in English than the girl I had the week before. I have not yet done the bingo because I thought the lady in charge was supposed to give us the Ipads but she said the kids have them, so next week I will start that. Since I couldn't do the bingo I decided to have the kids get a piece of paper and a pencil. We would go through each letter on the alphabet strip and think of a word that starts with the letter we picked up. At first it was a little shaky because my class was not in the room and I had to find them, but my student is so sweet. She is so smart and her English is great. She is super enthusiastic about learning and loved the games and activities that we did. I also think that one hour is a lot for them. It was interesting learning about how we were different in so many ways. It has been challenging finding another time to meet with my student. This was very interesting and I got to walk around the class during their individual work and watch them do their assignments. I also got to watch the teacher take a small group of 3 students during the individual time to work with them on the individual work, which was a reading activity, and it was really interesting to watch them read the book and how the teacher used different methods of teaching to help them with words they struggle on and how patient he was with them! My first day was cancelled due to president's day and on this past Monday, my student was absent. But, I observed the other tutors who were there at the same time as me and it eased a lot of my worries. I am super excited to finally meet my student! My student is adorable and was very excited to be pulled out of the classroom. She was a bit shy the first half of our session but began to open up as the session progressed. She speaks English really well and although she would occasionally make errors, she was quick to correct them and carried those corrections through the lesson. When we started, it was both of our first times working with the alphabet arch and the other materials (but of course I pretended like I knew EXACTLY what I was doing) so that was interesting. We are working on getting into a routine so that my student knows exactly what to expect when I come on Friday mornings. Like Samantha mentioned, my student also gets antsy and distracted sometimes. When I get the feeling his attention is waning, we talk about things he likes (video games, TikTok, etc), school, family, and generally just get to know each other. This gives him a chance to get comfortable with me AND gives me a chance to gauge his oral skills. All in all, my student is a great English speaker but seems to struggle with reading and possibly writing. He moved from his home to come to Austin to learn English. She was shy in the beginning but opened up a lot more as we did our activities. We did the before and after hands, alphabet strip, named words and the sounds of each letter, and played bingo. We also worked on our vowels and consonants, but she did struggle a little bit with identifying them. She was fluent in English so we could communicate easily, and I could tell she was having fun with all the activities. I am most excited to see how much my student improves throughout the weeks and how much more she'll open up. I showed up early the first time and they told me to come back which was totally fine- it just seemed like I was more of a distraction than I was there to help. The teacher made a face when I told her I needed 8 hours she was like wow maybe you could go to another classroom, I think this was because she wasn't quite sure what I was doing there. I was able to observe for an hour and then work on tutoring with a child for an hour, she speaks Spanish only and no English so when I asked her to work with me she looked at me blank, but I spent time with her and repeated over and over numbers 1-10 in english and she got to 7! I was so exited to see her try after I counted and then looked at her, and she would use her fingers like I did and say "one... twooo?" and I was like yes! good job! I cant wait to work with her this Friday to see if she has remembered anything we went over, I was thinking of making or brining something that we could count together because last time I was just using my fingers. I think the more I show up the more smoothly it will go instead of the teachers/ people that work at the school not knowing where to put me! I have a question- for the audio can it be anything we are working on or does it need to be specific, because my student really only knows how to count in English and thats really all we have worked on for the past 2 times. It took about 20-30 minuets to get her to respond to me (she was not able to understand me at all and was like what are we doing? who is this?) But after about 20-30 mins I just kept repeating in english counting my fingers and once I looked at her she was able to get the cue that maybe she should repeat it back to me! I have been able to really connect with my student. I went for the second time last week and he was excited to tell me all about his weekend and what he had done over the week we hadn't seen each other. I did the same activities with him both weeks. We went through the alphabet together and he said each of the sounds that the letters make. He is really great at that and needs no intervention from me to get it all correct. The thing that he has problem with is reading and putting all the letter's sounds together. I feel like he may have some form of dyslexia because he tends to jump around on the page and mix up the letters in a word. My student is bubbly and loves to learn. She knew all of her alphabet letters and sounds during our lessons. I got to know her and her amazing knowledge of animals and imagination. This lead to complex conversations where I saw how her wide range of vocabulary came from her love of learning about her interests. My student is the least shy out of the students and was very fluent in English which was not what I was expecting. I hope to continue to learn more about her and her language skills as we read books and do more activities about her interests in the future.
