1967年，普里查德的朋友鮑勃·奧布萊恩的家中建造了第一個戶外匹克球場。^[2]

匹克球的場地和羽球的場地完全相同，只是球網需要降到34吋（網球的網是36吋）的高度。使用的球大小如網球，是以ABS樹脂製成的薄殼中空球，直徑7.4公分，有26(室內)或是40(室外)個直徑約1厘米的孔。橫握的球拍形如較大的桌球拍，最初是木製的，目前有較輕的玻璃纖維、混合材料和碳纖維板的。

匹克球跟打法比較接近網球，手部揮拍動作多在腰部以下，運動量可比擬網球一樣激烈，但相較於網球更沒有運動傷害，例如網球肘，打匹克球就沒有網球肘的問題，所以有些長期打網球的人，到了一定的年齡想要運動就好，而不想要運動傷害的，會轉而打匹克球，在美國有九十幾歲的老人還在打匹克球，表示匹克球真的很適合樂齡族群。 另外值得一提的，不管老少，即便是幼稚園的小孩，打匹克球都是同一支球拍，不同於網球，年紀比較小的小朋友需要使用迷你網球專用球拍，而且匹克球比網球更好上手，匹克球外觀討喜，也很適合小朋友的運動。

相較於網球、羽球、兵乓球，匹克球的耗材比較少，頂多換換握把布，匹克球相較於網球不怕水，相較於羽球不怕風，相較於桌球不怕踩扁，有些體育用品店對於推廣匹克球是比較卻步的，但好玩的匹克球運動，是不會被埋沒的，^{[來源請求]}2022年，台灣知名的運動節目【全明星運動會第三季】全新項目就是匹克球，是公認的兼具趣味的好玩運動。

匹克球的規則和網球的規則類似，但是只是發球方可得分。此外，發球必須是在下手（腰下）擊球；雙方都必須在球於自己場地內落地一次之後方才可以凌空攔擊對方來球。匹克球的設計是使所有在場的人都能積極活動。匹克球是球落點的競技，是耐心的競技；它不是氣力和蠻力的競技。 擊球規則中，禁止在網前7英尺區域內凌空截擊對方來球，有助於減輕在網前過強的扣殺。

匹克球在美國已經成為中學體育課經常的運動項目，在年輕人和老年人中已經逐漸普遍。只是在紐約州，就有500多所學校將匹克球設為課程。美國每年在許多地方有匹克球的市鎮、州和全國的比賽。美國有匹克球全國聯誼會。

在台灣，匹克球有完善的教練、裁判講習，由中華民國匹克球協會主辦。台灣各地的匹克球協會、委員會，均與該協會合作，中華民國匹克球協會亦是亞洲匹克球聯合會AFP的一員，可舉辦國內及國際比賽。
