It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union, On Oct. 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 successfully launched and entered Earth's orbit. Thus, began the space age. The successful launch shocked the world, giving the former Soviet Union the distinction of putting the first human-made object into space.

The Soviet Union responded to the American announcement four days earlier of intent to launch artificial satellites for the International Geophysical Year, by declaring they would also launch a satellite "in the near future". The developments in ballistic missile capabilities made it possible to take the competition between the two states into space.[2] This gained public attention with the "Sputnik shock" when the USSR achieved the first successful artificial satellite launch and the USSR sent the first human to space. The USSR demonstrated an early lead in the race with these and other firsts over the next few years,[3] The USA knew they had to catch up to the USSR so they quickly started building Apollo 11 in order to try and be the first on the moon.

The space race helped transform technology today by spawning efforts to launch artificial satellites. It prompted competitive countries to send unmanned space probes to the Moon, Venus, and Mars. It also made possible human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and to the Moon. The space race also helped engineers to do extensive research on minimizing hydroplaning. They discovered that cutting grooves into runways helps channel water away from the runway and significantly reduces accidents. The space race also helped to invent water filters, charge-coupled devices, lifeshears, scratch-resistant eyeglass lenses, cochlear implants, anti-corrosion coating, and memory foam.
