After this, the town sort of adopts the mule as a mascot. During the novel, the mule, in my opinion, comes to symbolize the mistreatment and victimization of women, but also the lack of initiative taken due to this. When Jody purchases the mule to appease Janie's sense of pity for it, the town regards Jody as a savior, and adopts the freed mule as a kind of emblem. Throughout the novel, the mule symbolizes victimization, a theme that appears throughout the novel in various ways. "the yaller mule was gone from the town except for the porch talk, and the children visiting his bleaching bones now and then in the spirit of adventure(62)." I think this quote is significant obviously because of what the mule represents. The mule represents the lower class, those looked over, the people who "dont matter", the mule represents those who are meant to be forgotten. I found this quote to be powerful because in the first chapters Nanny explains that black women are the mules' of the world, they are the lowest creatures but now with the passing of the literal mule it is represented that even the "lowest creatures of earth"  will not be forgotten.

Matt was constantly ridiculed and made fun of because of his mule. However Janie takes pity on the mule and Jody buys it for her. Since Jody had saved the mule the town now identifies him as a kind of savior and this mule becomes a symbol for freedom and salvation and multiple other things. He refuses to let her attend the funeral just because she is a women. It seems like at first he tries to make up excuses but eventually

Often in the book African American woman are depicted as the mule of society but there is more connections. Janie was first "owned" to one man who treated her terribly and then was "bought" by Joe Starks. At first it looked like a good thing to do but in reality it caused a emotional death inside of Janie. The mule that is used in the story was owned by Matt Bonner and was severely underfed. Joe Starks then bought the mule and it was viewed as a heroic act.
