According to the New York Times, "[D]am building, over many years, has displaced 23 million people in China. The Three Gorges was supposed to be a model program that would not just move people but also rebuild communities." The people were forcibly moved from their villages and towns with generally little compensation.  This is a definite infringement on the basic rights of humans. The government is morally wrong for taking the land away at gunpoint. People building their livelihood should not have it taken away at the government's discretion.

According to researchers at Virginia Tech, "Decline of native fish and riparian vegetation... are all related to the dam operation."  The decline of food causes ripples in the economy of a small village as well as a large metropolis. Fishers have less too catch and then sell and restaurants must charge more for the fish because they purchased it for more from the fisher. Finally, it is more for the consumer so they must spend more on food instead of other facets of the economy.

As shown in a study by the Science Magazine, the dam has been believed to have caused habitat fragmentation. This is extremely dangerous especially in a country with relatively no regard for endangered species. Many of these animals will die because they cannot reproduce, thus lowering the amount of the species. This also decrease the biodiversity of the aquatic region.

The government originally claimed that it would be $22 billion to create, but they miscalculated. It ended up being $37.23 billion. The energy that is created would take decades to pay off the building cost. They built it to be the biggest and best in the world, only for it to be smaller and less efficient than the Itaipu Dam in Brazil. I would consider this to be a vast economic failure on behalf of the Chinese government.
