During the Cold War, the Olympics brought the competitive Olympic spirit to a whole new level. The USSR was known as a winter sports powerhouse and they expected to dominate in the Olympics. The Soviets saw the Olympics as a chance to show their power. It gave both the U.S. and the USSR a way to fight out their differences in competition without harming others.

How did boycotts play a role in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics?

A boycott is an action of refusing to take part in an activity as a form of protesting. The 1980 summer Olympics were hosted by Moscow, Russia and the US refused to attend as a form of protesting the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. The 1984 summer Olympics were hosted in Los Angeles and the Soviet Union and allies refused to come as a form of payback. The Olympics are a time for a country to show off their culture, many tourists flock to the country which boosts the economy, without many participating countries the Olympics were somewhat of a flop.

In the 1972 Olympics, a palestinian group of terrorists took nine Israeli athletes hostage and killed one. In the end, these hostages were killed gaining worldwide attention. This impacted the cold war because it proved that the Olympics could be used to make a point, good or bad.

Why was the Miracle on Ice competition so significant to the battle of the Cold War?

The Miracle on Ice was a huge competition between the Soviet Union and the US. On the outside, it looked like a simple Olympic medal round hockey game, but it was much deeper than that for the participating members. It was a fight between democracy and communism to prove which one produced better people and athletes. The United States performed a major upset and beat the Soviet Union which gave the US a sense of hope. Both sides knew that whoever won would gain a sense of respect and an upper hand.

I think the 1992 Olympics were a sign that the Cold War was over because there was no boycott and 169 countries participated. Though there was some political drama, the Olympics were able to happen without any large disaster.

One reason that competition was created between the US and the USSR was the Olympics were a global platform to demonstrate ideas. The Olympics have always been a highlight for many, and the world's attention always turns to the country who is hosting.
Another way that competition was created was because boycotting the Olympics was a major action that was not taken lightly because of how greatly anticipated the Olympics were. Skipping out on them makes a huge statement for the world to notice and analyze.
A final reason is the competition aspect of the Olympics gave both sides a way for them to fight out their differences without harming anyone. It clearly showed which country was dominant.

Comparisons Between Modern Olympics and Cold War Olympics

In present-day Olympics, there is some debate on whether Russian athletes should be allowed to compete due to a drug scandal. Because of this, they are now competing under a different name. This is similar to the Cold War because some countries had a sense of aggression against Russia that made a victory over Russia especially sweet which is also the case today.
Another comparison is modern day Olympics offer countries a chance to show off their country and culture. This relates to the Cold War because the USSR and the US used those Olympics to make a bold political statement about who they supported. It also displayed the democracy vs. communism argument.
Finally, there is some discussion about whether or not Russia should be allowed to compete in the 2024 Olympics due to their attack on Ukraine. This relates to the Cold War Olympics because of the debates on who should compete in the Olympics at that time due to rising political tensions.
