The first time that other countries, apart from the founding countries, joined the European Economic Community (as it was called at the time) was in 1973, these countries were Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom. With the joining of these countries, the European Economic Community had then 9 Member States. In this period of time the European Economic Community also started to transfer huge sums of money to create jobs and infrastructure in poor countries. The European Parliament also increased its influence in the Community’s affairs and in 1979 all citizens voted to choose their members directly. The European Economic Community also started to create laws to protect the environment.
Eva Moreira, 12ºA

The Treaty of Maastricht was signed on 7 February 1992 in Maastricht, Netherlands. This treaty founded the EU and established its pillar structure. It laid out some important new aims for the member countries, such as integrating their security and foreign policies, but it also kept goals already established by the ECSC, EEC, and EURATOM, such as further integrating their economies. Furthermore, this treaty changed the structure of the EU by organizing it into the "three pillars" - the community pillar, the foreign and security pillar, and the pillar of police and judicial cooperation. The Treaty of Maastricht was the official start of the EU.
Renata Santos, 12ºA
