Neo: an abused dog finds a home

By Sophia Idriss

Neo, a dog, has been abused very badly, says the police from the phone. He was very shy and scared when he got to the shelter Best Friends Animal Society in Bentonville, Arkansas, but finally warmed up to everyone there. Everyone loved him because he was so sweet and caring. No one knows why the owner abused him, and especially this dog that is so sweet. Neo’s abuser is going to trial soon and hopefully pay for his actions. Neo had to wait 465 days to even have a chance to get adopted, because he needed to wait for the abuse case to go through the court because he was evidence for the case.

Finally, after the abuse case went fully through the court, he could finally be able to get adopted by somebody. When a lady named Linda Songbird came to the shelter she fell in love with Neo and wanted to adopt him, Neo was so comfortable with her, it was amazing! “To meet a dog who had been through all of that who just immediately trusted you and immediately wanted attention from you was just mind-blowing… Neo was one that I was like ‘oh my gosh, we’re making a difference’” said Ali Paepke the manager of the shelter Neo was in. After this, Neo found a nice, comfortable, safe home and lived happily with Linda.

Neo: A sheltered dog that was a shelter for over 450 days

By Patrick Cheng

Neo is a shelter dog in central Arkansas that had been abused and been in a shelter for more than 450 days. Ali Paepke (the shelter owner) had very little hope that neo would be adopted. What happened to the dog, I wish no other dog would have to go through. She had a cruelty case and had been abused a lot of time before. But then hope arises in a form of a human. Linda Songbird was shocked at how many times Neo was abused and adopted her. This article was published on January 2nd 2024.

A quote from Linda Songbird, “It makes your life worthwhile” and “And he’s wonderful. He’s there as soon as you come in. He’s right at the door. Happy to see you.” This shows that Neo is loved and that he’s fully content with his new family and not being abused anymore. This shows that good people still exist, and that miracles can happen.

By Sam Gell

A miracle happened at Hopkinsville, Kentucky when Bolo, a stray pit bull, showed up at the local police station and joined chief of police Jason Newby and his cops in the force, “Oddly enough, everybody fell in love with him,” said Police chief Jason Newby“So when it came time for him to go back that day, they got him in his cage, and he kind of dropped his head and whimpered, and everybody’s heart melted, and we decided to adopt him.”

This heartwarming story caught the attention of people worldwide when the badging ceremony was posted on Facebook and this wonderful pup was dubbed the “Paw-trol” the story of Bolo appearing on the cop’s doorstep and being recruited, and becoming “police’s best friend”.

By Gray McCartan

On December 27th, 2023 a Massachusetts man named David Moulton saved a toddler from escaping from a daycare running toward a busy street. The toddler had been loose for about 30 minutes and seen wandering around the sidewalks near Massachusetts daycare, Salem Community Child Care. “I just scooped him up before he got to the street over there” Said Mr. Moulton. Mr. Moulton has been working as a postal worker for 8 years and saw the three-year-old run by him twice. The incident happened near Central Street. Many had seen him wandering around or near the street, and at first he thought he was playing with other kids and was fine. The second time, he scooped up the toddler and called 911. One thing he said was that “He’s got no shoes and no jacket on, it’s like, this isn’t right. I’m wearing four layers of clothing, you know.” This shows that he used his instincts and saved him. “He ran past me this way first in the park. At first, I didn’t think anything of it, I thought he was playing with kids or something like that, and then all of a sudden, he zipped by me again, I thought he’s heading to a busy street.” This shows that he just saw him and took action to save the kid's life.

By Calder Robinson

Have you heard about the Saiga antelope? Probably not, it was an endangered species that lived in Central Asia. The Saiga was endangered because of poachers, habitat loss, and sickness. But it is no longer endangered! It is no longer endangered because of environment conserve groups.

This is good because that these groups can focus on other animals in danger and save more animals. The Saiga will finally have a spot in the world.

Lew Burja, a 92-year-old man that does Tia chi daily, has a full dedication to it because he does it almost every single day. He started when he was 50 years old at a fair in England, at the time had chest pains and could really do sports anymore. When he saw them doing Tia chi, the first thing he thought, it is slow, but you need balance and strength. Before he had chest pains, he played rugby and American football. Lew Burja said, “At my age I have friends dying all around me and Tia chi has kept me going.” This shows that he's ancient and the only fun hobby for him is Tia chi. The secret of Lew Burja’s life is when he got into Tia chi he was not the best if not the worst one in the class but almost every one he got better because his fluence to it is amazing. So if you're not the best at something, if you try hard you will be the best as long as you practice.

By Adam Idriss

Zahed Haftlang was an Iranian medic who fought in the Iran and Iraq war. This war lasted eight years, going on from 1980 to 1988. In 1982 Zahed Haftlang was a medic in the war Khorramshahr, while on the other side, Najah Aboud, was a soldier who fought for Iraq in the war. Najah Aboud crawls into a bunker to die after being wounded. Then Zahed Haftlang, the Iranian medic, runs in and saves him from death instead of killing him.

After that, they never saw each other again. Then Twenty years after the war, they both met again in a waiting room. Zahed said “Najah is like family, he really is my angel, because he gave me a new chance at life. He is the dearest and most precious thing in the entire world to me.” This just goes to show how brave Zahed was to save Najah. Najah was conscripted into the army at eighteen. He was very brave to have fought at such a young Age. Also, how fortunate he was to have someone as kind-hearted as Zahed Haftlang to save him from death.

This scary incident occurred on December 29, 2023, just after midnight and when this happened, luckily there was a patrol officer driving on the highway watching all of it happen. When patrol officer Richard Brewster called for back up, the car started smoking, but luckily his backup showed up. As they showed up, he ran over to the car and was checking if Ricca Soto had a pulse. When the car started flaming a little bit everyone was saying back up there's fire and the patrol officer said no there's someone still in the car.

In the end, Ricca ended up getting saved and as soon as they took her out of the car it started fuming with flames she was very lucky to be alive, any longer she would have been stuck in the fuming car. Her stepdaughter Elizabeth Soto said, "It's really challenging to even watch that video and know it's somebody close to me.” This hero cop ended up being at the right place at the right time and saved someone's life because he was.

Dogs know what you're saying

BY ALEXANDER PRESTON EL-HAG

So there were some scientists at Atlantis, Emory university. Then one of the scientists wanted to study dogs, so he put the dog in the M.R.I machine, and then he found something shocking! He found that dogs can understand you! They think dogs can understand us because if you keep on using the same words, for example if you say fetch and play it they will understand what fetch mean’s. They found this on November 25, 2018.

Some scientists believe that when you say a word that they don't know, they come up with a picture in their head of what they think you want them to do.

A quote for this is: “Many dog owners think that their dogs know what some words mean, but there really isn’t much scientific evidence to support that. We wanted to get data from the dogs themselves — not just owner reports,” said Ashley Prichard, a Ph.D. at Emory’s Department of Psychology and the study’s first author.

Thank you for reading this, I hope you learned something about dogs. Dogs are great animals, maybe you can get a dog one day.

During covid 5,500 doctors and nurses gotten infected before Boston Dynamics had a smart idea, they thought if they made a robot and put an iPad on it the doctors could be home or in their office and FaceTime them so they don't get infected and help the patents. Then they made the robot dog a yellow and black 3 foot tall 70 pound robot dog with an iPad on its face, so doctors can FaceTime them. They made it in late 2019. And it helped a lot since then.

Now, doctors around America might still be using the robot dog that saved many lives during covid. Boston Dynamics was even smart enough to attach a UVC light on the back of the robot do and that kills virus partials around the robot dog's area. People can control the dog with a video game controller. This little dog that was made by Boston Dynamics saved many lives.

Park ranger carries very dehydrated dog down mountain path

By Griffinn Lee

One day, as a group of hikers was walking up a mountain trail on Mount Tammany in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area. The temperature was getting to 90 degrees when they found a person whose dog was way too hot, and super dehydrated. The group gave the dog all their water, but it was still dehydrated. It was clear the dog needed the vet. The owner was tired himself, so he couldn’t carry the dog down the trail. Then, he called Kris, one of the park rangers there. He found the owner and hoisted the dog onto his back to carry him down the mountain. He carried him approximately two miles down a very rocky path. Eventually, he got to a stream, where he laid the dog in the water and showered it on him. Then he hiked down to the street. The owner then got the dog to the vet. "The dog was looking a little bit better by the time he got in the car and picking up his head," says Tori Matyola.

Thankfully, the 100 pound German Shepard was able to survive thanks to the park ranger Kris Salapek. Later, Lexie (one of the hikers that found the owner and the dog.) posted about what Kris did that day, it went viral. That trek through the forest took about an hour, while carrying the huge dog on his back. As you can see, Kris Salapek did something heroic that day, it can make us feel a little better about the world today.

In 2017, Jayna Zweiman created the Welcome Blanket Project. The Welcome Blanket Project is where people all over America make blankets for immigrants coming to America.

Jayna started the project after Donald Trump gave his first speeches, about building a wall on the boarders of Mexico and America. Her grandparents were immigrants, and after she heard this news, she was upset.

After the speeches, Mexican immigrants started coming to America, and she made blankets for them. To welcome them to America.

Now more people than ever have joined in this project. People knit, sew, and crochet and blankets, that people choose at events. In Vermont, Aisha Bitini, who had picked one of the blankets at the event, said“I’m so blessed to have one of them,”. People feel welcomed by these blankets. Now most of these blankets are made for Ukrainian refugees coming from Ukraine.

By : Grace Wehking

By: Amelia Renner

Have you ever heard of the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh? Maybe you’ve heard of his namesake, an eight-year-old boxer-pit-bull mix. When he was four years old, he was used as bait in a dog fighting ring. He was so injured, a shelter in North Carolina had to have his left ear surgically removed. (much like the real Van Gogh, who cut off his left ear). Van Gogh was then taken care at the North Carolina shelter. They tried to get him adopted, but if they didn’t in time, the sweet dog would have to be put down. Jaclyn Gartner, of the Happily Furever After Rescue, saw this poor dog and put Van Gogh on a non-profit coordination, called Pilots N paws. They put him on a plane, and flew him to Gartner, who was determined to find this dog a forever home. Van Gogh was friendly from the start. But still, no one wanted to adopt him.

Jaclyn almost gave up, until she came up with an Idea. She wanted to make Van Gogh to look more appealing, so she decided to teach him how to “paint.” She got a canvas, dotted it with different color paints, and put it in a plastic bag. Then, she smeared peanut butter on to the bag, and let the lovable artist take over from there. "I'd seen TikTok videos of other dogs creating paintings, so why not Van Gogh?" He certainly had the name and the ear for it," Jaclyn explained to The Washington Post. She then started selling his paintings. They started selling almost immediately. Everyone had heard of Van Gogh, but still, no one wanted him. Finally, Jessica Starowitz, a local foster volunteer fell in love with the pooch, and adopted him. Now, he lives in Connecticut, making paintings to sell online. He finally has a place to call home.

An adorable stray labrador mix was caught trying to steal a stuffed unicorn from a dollar general in Kennencefield, North Carolina, not once, not twice, but 5 TIMES. After the 5th time the manager called animal control, and soon officer Samantha Lane showed up. She bought the unicorn for him, and sure enough, he followed her into the car. “I’m astounded by his affinity for the unicorn,” Samantha Lane says. Soon enough, he was adopted and named Sisu, from the movie “Raya And The Last Dragon”

23-Year-Old Colorado Woman Saves Children From 15-Feet-Deep Icy Pond

By Avani Gupta

In the icy winter of Denver, Colorado, Dusti Talavera was sitting in the living room of her house, looking out the window. Three kids were happily playing on a pond right next to her house. Talavera looked away, but when she glanced back, the ice had cracked, and the children were struggling to stay above water in the fifteen feet deep pond. Before Talavera realized what she was doing, she was running out, pulling the kids out of the water. She pulled out an eleven-year-old, and a four-year-old, but as she went for the 6-year-old, Talavera fell in too. “I tried to hold her head up, I tried to hold my head up, the pond was really deep. A young man threw us a rope. He pulled us out,” said Talavera. The sixteen-year-old cousin of the six–year-old grabbed a rope and was able to pull the both of them out of the freezing pond. By the time they were out safely, the six-year-old had lost all consciousness. Talavera pulled the six-year-old out to the sidewalk, and soon later, the sirens of red ambulances came rolling down the road. The officials gave the girl CPR, and she made it to the hospital breathing, and with a pulse. The girl is alive and well, and 23-year-old Dusti Talavera is a hero.

Back at the station, the fire department contemplates what would have happened if one of their children got into the same accident. “It was a perfect storm. We were talking back at the fire station after it happened, and I hope is something like that happened to one of my boys, someone like her would be close by.” Says South Metro Fire Engineer Corey Sutton. And because of Dusti Talavera, a Colorado hero, children were saved.

One day in 2021, a stray Labrador mix in Duplin, North Carolina, specifically Kenansville NC, dashes into a Dollar General running to one place that's set in her hart. She is running to the toy section to get a small pink stuffed unicorn. It's in her sight when, Bam! The employee grabs her and puts her outside again. And guess what? He tried to steel it 5 more times! But on the fifth time, The store called animal control. When animal control officer Samantha Lane arrived, the dog was sitting in the parking lot, eagerly awaiting her next chance to steel. Samantha felt so bad that she bought the poor stray the $10 unicorn, and brought it to the station. The story of the adorable puppy and his new stuffed friend got around quickly, and Sisu was adopted after only a few days. “I was astounded by the dogs’ affinity for the unicorn.” Said Samantha Lane.
Brazilian Artist Finds New Way To Repurpose Tires

Brazilian artist, pet lover, and environmentalist, Amarildo Silva Filho, was walking on the streets of Campina Grande, Brazil when he'd noticed unused big piles of old tires, he also saw many stray dog and cats without beds sleeping on the floor. Noticing these things, he sparked an idea to start using those old tires to make beds for the stray dog and cats. How, you might ask? Silva Filho quit his job in retail to focus on his mission. To make the beds first, he cleans them out, then he saws off the top half, next covers the center hole with plywood, after that he sews in colorful cushions and pillows, so the pests are comfortable, Finally he paints each tire with bright colors and patterns, and even the pets name so they feel at home.

Silva Filho's beds were getting so popular that he turned his tires into a business, Comenius Pets. He advertised his business through social media like Instagram. Most profits of Comenius Pets went to Animal shelters in Brazil. Silva Filho also enjoys volunteering and animal shelters on the weekend. Silva Filho started making his beds and 2019 and has made over 6,000 pet beds and hopes to continue making many more. Silva Filho is happy with what he does and does a great job, Silva Filho believes, ¨ The only way to do a great job is to love what you do, ¨ He was quotes saying by My Modern Met. A website that showcases meaningful art

By Annabelle Pepin

On January 4, 2022, which was a Monday, truckers were extremely generous when hundreds of travelers and drivers were stranded on an icy interstate for a very long time. The incident occurred on Virginia’s 1-95 highway. The trucker had given food and water to the people because many were stuck for almost 24 hour and more. Some people could have run out of gas, which would have been very bad. A snowstorm had occurred, and many people were still on the highway. On Monday, it was very cold, but Tuesday, it was 16 degrees. But the nice truckers gave some people warm breakfast.

The reason of the people being stuck was because of the snowstorm, which caused a car crash. Six tractor-trailers were in the crash, that was taking place in the storm involved in the car crash. The truckers were handing out food to some of the drivers, who were very concerned about being stuck and running out of water and food. There were hundreds of drivers and travelers, and most of the people got food. One out of the many truck drivers said that they had supplies and how if people needed it, they should ask for it. One of the reporters, Jim DeFede, even got a case of water from the truck drivers. The truckers were walking around many of the hundreds of cars, trying to give them food.

On November 13th, 2021, 11-year-old Laney Perdue and her Dad, Mike Perdue rode a plane to go to Beaver Island, Michigan, Laney’s favorite place in the world. It was supposed to be a 20-minute flight there, and they had taken the flight many times before. There were only five passengers in the plane, and when they were around eighteen minutes into the flight, the plane crashed, killing four out of the five passengers instantly. Laney was the only sole survivor of the crash, and her dad had given her a “bear hug”, that had basically saved her life. Mike was known for his tight, loving hugs.

Even though Laney survived, she broke 11 bones, had to wire her jaw shut, and she had to re-learn how to walk. When she came out of the hospital, she was in a wheelchair, and had many surgeries on her foot and hand. Laney couldn’t remember most of what happened, but she did remember something important. She tells news reporters from the People, “I felt this feeling in my stomach like the plane just dropped, and my dad had his feet out like he was bracing for something,” she said. “The last thing I remember is my dad giving me the tightest hug ever.

He got out of his car to go and grab the kittens in hopes of being able to keep him, but to his surprise, 12 more kittens emerged from the tall grass on the side lines. Robert Blantley saw the weary and dirty cat, he thought he could go and rescue the kitten, but when 12 more came rushing his way he was happy to rescue the other 12 as well. However, he didn't keep them all as he wrote “anyone wanting at kitten at screaming price? I’ll cut you a deal.” After successfully rescuing all 12 kittens, he gave all of them a warm bath and some milk.

This single act of kindness led to saving 12 kittens lives that day, This shows that anyone can help people or animals. As he was bringing the 13 kittens home, he noted, “The tactical Honda was not prepared for this.” Though he was just trying to help, people on Instagram let him know that if the mother was out hunting he just separated them, but I think he did the right thing saving all the kittens and bringing them to loving homes.

In Arlington, Washington state. In a city near Seattle. A dog named Lucy saved the day! The owner, Douglas O’Connor II, and his Australian shepherd-Labrador mix. The 3-year-old dog sensed something bad, when she looked outside through the window, she was barked to wake up her owners. It was after 3:00a.m. and was an early Friday. She changed her tune to alert her owners, while the fire was consuming the neighbor's house. O’Connor II was sleeping, when his dog barked “Loud, screaming-type bark. It was totally different than her just barking at a usual, usual bark. It was totally—woke us both up. Something’s wrong. Wow. She was trying to tell us something.'” The wife went to investigate, they saw the fire out the window, and called 911 and firefighters to save the workshop of a nearby North Country home. The owner was sleeping by the time the engine arrived. The bark was strong from the dog Lucy, it woke up other neighbors as well who reported the fire also. “She was in the bay window just continuing to bark,” The whole side of the house was on fire. When the firefighters arrived, most of the building was burned. The police praised Lucy all over social media. O’Connor II was super proud and happy of his hero dog.

It was late August, and the group was camping near Lake Tahoe in California. Later on, Russ got scared by somebody and ran far away. Ricardo Rodriguez and his friends looked for Russ for hours, but then called the local shelters to report that he was missing. Rodriguez had to leave without his dog. “After months of not hearing back from anyone, I assumed he was in good hands with a different owner,” Rodriguez told CNN. This explains that although Rodriguez missed his dog, he had to let him go.

On December 16, 2021, a skier saw a small figure next to a tree near Twin Peaks, on the west side of South Lake Tahoe. The Animal Service Center couldn’t get the dog, so they called Wendy Jones, the founder and executive director of Tahoe PAWS and TLC. She sent Leona Allen and Elsa Gaule to go find Russ. Allen saw a set of tracks that led up to a tree. “I was halfway up the hill and I heard Leona start yelling,” Gaule said. “At first I wasn’t sure what she was yelling about, but then she said, “Elsa, I found him, and he’s alive!” After he was found, Russ was carried to the vet immediately and was said to be completely healthy. Rodriguez was told that they have found his dog and informed him about where Russ was, using a microchip. Finally, after four months, Russ and his owner had reunited with each other.

It was Friday at 3:00 a.m. when Lucy woke up from sleeping to notice the fire. She went into her owner's room to alarm them of the fire, “Normally, I just yell at her to go to sleep, you know” said O’Conner. It was an unlikely bark, like screaming, but they could tell Lucy was trying to tell him something. O’Conner's wife went to go check on Lucy and saw the burning fire. With the fire across the street and Lucy’s alarming bark, the called 911 before it spread more! When the fire department came, they killed the fire. If Lucy wasn’t there and didn’t alert her owners, the fire would have spread to other buildings. Officers praised Lucy for her quick actions. “She’s just a good dog, She’s really one of a kind. They do this to help stop poaching in South Africa’s national parks. These dogs need the right geneticist, the right training, and, most importantly, the right mind set to bring it all together. This guy named Braman grew up raising just these types of dogs with his dad; the father and son team would train groups of 15 dogs to follow the scent of animals.

There has been a ten-fold increase in successful apprehensions of poachers thanks to the work of the k9 program. They can track down the poachers way faster than a human. The game changer has been the free tracking dogs, who are able to track so good that the best human trackers would lose spoor.

Group of Teens Come Together to Lift Car Off Mother and Two Children

By Arabelle Collin

It was early December when a mother, her two-year-old son, and her three-year-old daughter walked to their car through the Layton Christian Academy parking lot in Utah. Another woman, partially blinded by the winter sun, accidentally ran over the three people. The three-year-old daughter was able to escape, but her mother and brother remained trapped under the car. Soon after, a group of at least 20 students dropped everything to help save them.

“I hear all these commotions, people telling me, 'Come help, come help! ' So I drop my stuff and ran over,” sophomore Theo Roach told KSL TV. The mother only had to go to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, thanks to the courageous and quick action of the student body. The children escaped with minor bruises and scrapes. If not for these young high school heroes, it might have been much worse. The mother and her children must have been so grateful that the students were there and were able to save them. It’s stories like these that make you realize just how responsible and incredible the younger generation of the world is.

By Luke Nascimento

A deer got its life saved by two firefighters. The deer was stuck on the ice, and the firefighters pushed it to safety. This was on December 2, 2023. It was in Minnesota, at Pike lake. It was the first time they have heard firefighters use curling, an Olympic sport.

This started when worried locals called the Prior lake fire department. They saw the deer’s legs sinking into the ice. The two firefighters used a curling technique. They used a Y-shaped pole to push the deer off the ice. It was incredible.

‘’It was struggling to get off thin ice. Firefighters put on their protective gear and carefully crawled across the ice. They were successfully able to push the deer to the shore.’’

That deer’s life was saved that day, and it was because of heroic firefighters.

Their names are Red, Orange, and Blue, so none of the workers could get too attached to them.

Kassey was able to take care of them because of how she was pregnant recently and there is enough milk in her body to take care of them and breastfeed all 8 pups.

Although they experienced some difficulties because they were not with their own species, the pups are now 11 weeks old and thriving!

Lucy is a dog who lives in Arlington, Washington, with her owners, Mr Douglas O’Conner II and Mrs O’Conner. It all had stared around 12;00pm when Lucy was sleeping and the living room, and she had seen a fire! As soon as Lucy saw the fire she knew something was wrong, she started barking until she wasn't the only one who knew about the fire.

Mr O’Conner was going to yell at Lucy, but Lucy was had been barking a bark Mr O’Conner had never heard before, like a crying bark and a sharp one. Finally, he decided to come down and see what was up. When he made it downstairs, he saw half of their neighbors' workshop on fire! He quickly got his wife and called 911. The fire department got there as soon as possible. When they were done with the fire, they came over to see the hero, LUCY. If Lucy did not bark the fire could have got to the house and been a lot worse, thanks to Lucy every one was safe and the damage to the working shop was not bad at all.
