When I tell students about the group I will:

-Describe the group

-Tell students what they are gaining from being in the group

-Tell students about expectations of members

I will screen members individually and assess their readiness to participate by:

-Asking them to explain their understanding of the group's purpose

-Asking them if they have any questions for me about the group

-Asking if they are willing to adhere to group expectations and ground rules

-Asking them what their goals for growth are

-Asking them why they are interested in the group

Stage 2: Students will be expected to stay on task and be given simple tasks and goals to complete during each meeting. It will be made clear that if they don't work productively and cohesively, they will be asked to leave the group. Since our school is so small, I don't feel like there will be more than 10-12 in the group. I should be able to check in with each group member individually each session and help with anything they need.

Stage 3: When closing the group it will be crucial that I reinforce the idea of confidentiality and that even though the group is over that doesn't mean the confidentiality of it is. Moving forward, they must remain confidential regarding all things relating back to the group. I will then give each students a small survey to complete asking them to rate their overall experience in the group, how they feel about what they learned in the group, what their next step moving forward is, and how they feel about the group ending.

The whole basis of the small group is to provide students with an opportunity to learn about affording college and provide them with ways to potentially pay for it. This falls right in with this standard that focuses on helping students navigate postsecondary financial aid processes and admissions.

c. Maintain and communicate high expectations for every student, regardless of cultural, social or economic background (ASCA, 2019)

School counselors are expected to maintain high expectations for all students regardless of their economic background. This small group will be held to high standards and will be learning how to financially prepare for college because regardless of their economic status, I feel like all students have the potential to attend some form of higher education.
