Group Dynamics Stages

Stage 1: I plan on building relationships and trust with my group by first explaining to them that I am going to be open and vulnerable with them, so it is okay for them to be with me. I will then explain what confidentiality is and how important it is to our group. With that being said there is no way to ensure complete confidentiality when working in a group with multiple students. Students should be made aware of this possibility and encouraged to use their best judgement on what they are comfortable sharing in the group.

Stage 2: Students will be expected to stay on task and be given simple tasks and goals to complete during each meeting. It will be made clear that if they don't work productively and cohesively, they will be asked to leave the group. Since our school is so small, I don't feel like there will be more than 10-12 in the group. I should be able to check in with each group member individually each session and help with anything they need.

Stage 3: When closing the group it will be crucial that I reinforce the idea of confidentiality and that even though the group is over that doesn't mean the confidentiality of it is. Moving forward, they must remain confidential regarding all things relating back to the group. I will then give each students a small survey to complete asking them to rate their overall experience in the group, how they feel about what they learned in the group, what their next step moving forward is, and how they feel about the group ending.

I believe a participative leadership style would benefit this group the most. It would allow the group to feel like they are having a say in making big choices that are shaping their futures, but also that they have someone there to guide them and help them along the way.

Direct advice is receiving and giving suggestions for strategies for handling problems. Student's will be able to ask me any question they may have regarding paying for college. They will also be provided with several potential ways they can start to prepare for college and get going on making their dreams come true.
