         <title>1947: Signing of the Truman doctrine </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Truman doctrines aim was to beat Stalin to helping hurt-countries after war. Truman feared if Stalin helped neighboring countries then they would turn to communism with Stalin and the Soviet Union. The United States provided economical and financial aid to Greece and Turkey to influence them to resist communism at all cost.&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Eisenhower doctrines aim was to also stop communism from spreading. One important thing is that it only provided assistance for middle Eastern countries under their request. This doctrine was a broader strategy for the U.S. to contain communist spread and help countries that were being targeted for Soviet expansion.</p>]]></description>

         <title>1957: The launch of Sputnik</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1 into space making it the world's first satellite. This alarmed the United States because they knew that if the Soviets could launch satellites they could also launch nuclear weapons. Sputnik's successful launch showed what advanced technology the Soviet Union had during this time, ultimately leading to a rise of investments in science mainly in the United States.&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <title>1960: the invention of U-2 planes </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The U-2 planes were high altitude aircrafts made by the United States during the Cold war. This new plane was capable of flying to 70,000 feet in the air, too far for any enemy to signal radar or fire missiles at. The use of the planes was to gather as much information from enemy territories by using high zoom cameras to take pictures. The U.S. gained valuable information using these planes.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Korea was divided after World War II resulting in the establishment of two separate governments and countries called North and South Korea. Japan had surrendered in 1945, Korea, which was under Japanese rule, was divided along the 38th parallel. The soviets held the North making it communist and the United States held the South making it capitalist. Ideological differences between both sides led to the making of two different states, North and South Korea.&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb called “little boy,” caused massive destruction, killing an estimated 140,000 people. Three days later on August 9, 1945, a second bomb called “fat man” was dropped on Nagasaki. This bombing killed 70,000 people. These bombings played a crucial role in Japan’s surrender, leading to the end of WWII.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Joseph McCarthy was a U.S. senator who became famous for his aggressive investigations and accusations of communist spies in the U.S. government. McCarthy claimed to have lists of communists working in the government, he had little to no evidence for these accusations. His tactics wear aggressive questioning and public hearings which ruined lives and careers for some people. McCarthy was later censured by the Senate never speaking again.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were American citizens who were convicted of espionage for allegedly passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The evidence against them were testimonies from Ethel’s brother, who claimed they had recruited him to spy. The rosenbergs were found guilty and sentenced to death by electric chair on June 19, 1953.</p>]]></description>
