Explanation-The way Marlow is characterized showcases a real person as opposed to that of an animal. This sets him apart from everyone else and connects with the theme of inner versus outer identity. Marlow's  identity can be seen throughout the novel by his actions, appearance, and words. Another reason could be their job. Explanation- The narrator was separating Marlow from the rest of the clan because he is the only one who truly "followed the sea". He loves traveling and seeing the world unlike most men who are only looking for ivory because of the power it includes. The men are succumbing to the darkness to make ends meet which is the opposite as to why Marlow is at sea.
