1. How are the characters affected by political ideologies?
The characters are affected by classism because they are encouraged to chase and achieve the American Dream in order to be something in society. “maybe we could buy a ranch. Raise cattle, use our muscles”. He also says he wants his own “apartment, car, and plenty of women”. This relates to chasing the American Dream because Biff is motivated to live life in a way where he can thrive, and do something he he enjoys.

The ikea effect and the ideologies represent the American dream presented in death of a sales men. American dream is the equality and opportunity that is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved. Tee ikea effect is “the love millions of Americans display toward their self-assembled furniture.” These too relate to each other because with the aspirations and goals people are allowed to make furniture and are able to value it as if it is their own. The ideologies represent the death of a salesman because capitalism is used greatly in the death of a salesman “An ideology is a belief system, and all belief systems are products of cultural conditioning. For example, capitalism,” . Capitalism is an economic and political system in which country’s trade and industry is controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by state. Death of a salesman reflected on the capitalist system in thee 1940’s that fueled the American dream as a perfect bait for the working class to use. Willy represented the bulk of the capitalist society because he was a worker whose needs were not satisfied despite his labor. He was never able to make as much money as he wanted to in his life which caused him to struggle

I think that death of a sales man and supreme are related because of the certain image they play off. Supreme creates this hip pop culture brand that stands out to young people. Supreme relates to death of a sales man because all willy wanted to do I become a successful business man. Willy would lie to hi family just so they would think he was successful at his job. “willy loman never made a lot of money”. A lot of people knew he wasn’t successful but they would just let him believe so because that is all he ever wanted in life. I feel like with supreme they became so popular because of what the image they had was. That is how willy tried to get by because he would just pretend like he was someone has not just so he would get more business and customers, but by doing that it caused him to go crazy because you can’t just fake your life, Your whole life. Supreme would use their title to sell their goods for way more money than what they were worth. That was all willy wanted was to sell good for so much money. Willy whole goal in life was to just be successful to others if that regarded faking it his whole life. I feel like willy boss started to see how rebellious he was which also related to supreme because they tended to be a rebellious business. But it is clear that they related in some ways and that willy always just wanted one thing and it was to just be successful and the brand supreme was able to become successful why couldn’t he. Unfortunately, he died before he was ever able to figure that out. Maybe no one will ever know.

Andrea Ballestero- Ikea Effect

The Ikea effect and the role of ideologies are both related to concept of the American Dream in Death of a Salesman. The Ikea effect is related to the American Dream because of the ideal of creating something yourself. I think people are also drawn to the American Dream because you will have created a perfect life for yourself with hard work. People like to feel accomplished, and building your own furniture, gives you a sense of accomplishment, which is what Americans strive for. Just like how in Ikea you have to build your own "self-assembled furniture", with the American Dream, you have to create and design the path that you want your life to be in. As for the article of the role of ideologies, this is related to the American Dream because of the cornerstone of ideologies, which is individualism. America relies on individualism because of all the ideas and thoughts that people are able to share that makes everyone their own person. I think that America is successful because people are able to be individualistic and succeed in their own ways. Individualism is the ideal of a person who wants to pursue a goal with hard work, just like the Ikea effect, these go together because people are attracted to being able to pursue and reach their goals on their own. Both the Ikea effect and individualism represent how some people in America are. People like to be their own person and make a living out of making important decisions that will shape their path. Individualistic people will try to create and build their future, just like the people who love to buy their furniture at Ikea, which symbolizes the American Dream. The ideal of the American Dream demonstrates how although people want to live this dream life, where they can have plenty of money to be comfortable, they must reach this goal with hard work.

The brand Supreme portrays themselves as this rebellious image that is well liked by people and has become a highly popular brand. The brand can be related to Death of a Salesman because the ideals of capitalism portrayed by the brand, and how capitalism also appears in the play. Supreme originated in the United States, and thus, has spread to the world because of how popular the clothing trends have become. However, this brand is also related to Death of a Salesman because of how people want to wear Supreme because it is the latest trend and to be like everyone else. Some people want to wear Supreme because of the trend, but also to appear a certain way that is trending to society. Some people do this to appear a certain way to other people and make it seem like they are successful. This can be related to Death of a Salesman because Willy tells his family that he is successful at his job, even though he is not. In the play, Linda is well aware that Willy is not as successful as he says he is... “Willy Loman never made a lot of money” and she admits that “a terrible thing is happening to him,” which is that he is extremely exhausted from going to work as a salesperson, but not being able to earn any money or be successful at his job. I think that Supreme can be related to the money that Willy says he has to his family. Linda knows that the company Willy works for “took away his salary,” therefore, I think that Willy still tries to portray this persona of being the successful man of the family that works to bring back for the family. Just like Willy, people pretend to be someone they are not by buying items from this brand to seem like they also have this rebellious image of themselves.

The Flute works to highlight his flashback's. when you hear the flute in the play it shows that he is being reminded of his past. For instance, when "music is heard" Willy is reminded of the feeling of wanting to "kiss the life outa" Linda when they were on the road.

The American West and Africa: America West and Africa symbolize biffs potential in the west Americas. Biff realizes that he is only content with his life when he is working on a farm. His westward escape shows us that he is trying to get away from Willy's delusions and live a more simple and successful life. On the other hand, Africa symbolizes Willy's failure in life. Thus, Biff demonstrates that he wants to move out West when he says "Texas is cool". He continues to say, "why don't you move out west with me" and "maybe we can buy a ranch". Biff has the idea that if he moves to the West, he can live a less complicated life, so he idolizes the ideal of the West.

Willy and Biff are so different that they bring out each others personalities. Biff is able to accept failure, but Willy has too much pride to recognize that he has failed. This difference makes their characters clash. In the text Bill says, "I'm not the man somebody lends that kind of money to", when talking about Willy, which demonstrates the difference in opinions that Biff expresses. At the end of the play though, Willy and Biff come to make amends. Willy shows his true feelings that he wanted to make amends with his son this whole time, he says "that boy is going to be magnificent", which shows that although they served as foils to each other, they were able to manage their differences and come to the conclusion that they actually love each other. They were both very stubborn.

appearance vs. reality: Throughout the story you can see that willy's appearance is way different than what his reality actually is. Willy makes himself seem like he is a good buisness man and that he makes good money for his family when in actuality he was having to ask Charley his brother in law for money. "charley, look... i got my insurance to pay. if you can manage it- i need a hundred and 10 dollars."

individual vs. society: In death of a salesmen, Willy Loman is failing to achieve society's view of success. Willy desires to reach the achievement of the "American Dream". But he is constantly failing to reach that status. Willy says "nothing's working out. I don't know what to do." This shows us that willy is constantly failing. He is trying to be a successful business man and put off that image to his family and people surrounding him, but he knows that he isn't a successful man. Towards the end of the play, the play actually suggests that achieving the American dream is impossible.

individual vs. self: In the play, Willy struggles with himself. At the end, he has to come to the conclusion that he can not become his ideal self, which is to become a successful salesman, therefore, he commits suicide. Willy struggles with himself because he is unable to accept that he has failed in life, so he reacts poorly. Willy says, "then hang yourself. For spite, hang yourself!". He struggled with himself, which also shows why he constantly had flashbacks of his past life, he wishes his life now was how it was before. Therefore, he attempts to kill himself because he cannot stand the failure.

The title of the play had symbolized his dream of being successful and having successful sons who made it big in the world, and his suicide was the death of it.

Willy could be argued for either a tragic hero or anti-hero, but he holds more qualities of an anti-hero. Willy had constantly wanted more for his family and the way of going about it was very unconventional. If Willy had killed himself due to the grief and thought that he was the reason for his both of his sons amounting to nothing. But instead he came to the conclusion that his death would mean money for his family, and this in turn makes him the perfect candidate for being a anti-hero.

Andrea Ballestero- Anti-hero

I think that Willy Loman was an anti-hero because he did not possess virtues that were associated with any type of heroism. However, Willy still has the audience's sympathy because of how he is going through his own mental conflicts. In the play, the audience shows empathy because of how everything in Willy’s life had gone wrong and he was going crazy because of it, his job and his relationship with Biff. An example of Willy’s lack of mental stability is when he attempts to hang himself, but Biff stops him. At the end of the play, Linda is grieving the death of her husband after he crashed his car, and she says, “help me Willy, I can’t cry. It seems to me that you’re just on another trip”. I think that this scene specifically reached the audience and made them feel sorry for Willy and his wife. Willy’s flaws are his pride of not being able to accept that he has failed and is going through a financial crisis. Biff says to his dad, “Dad, you’re never going to see what I am, so what’s the use of arguing? If I strike oil I’ll send you a check”. This shows his flaw, which is being stubborn about money and his relationship with his son, which is driving him crazy. Willy’s downfall is because of his choice to not want help from people, like Charley, who had also offered to help him. Willy is an anti-hero because he does not have any virtues of heroism, yet the audience and the characters in the play pity him because of his failure in his job.

Cameron Aaron - The Ikea Effect

The Ikea effect and the role of ideologies are related to the Death of a Salesman because of the idea of the American Dream. In “Death of a Salesman” Willy’s goal is to reach this status quo of success and recognition. He wants to create his own success story in his own life. This relates to the Ikea effect because of the way that Ikea markets their product. They set up their store to where you can see the furniture in home like settings to where you can create your own idea version of your home. Not only can you envision how you want your home to look, but you can also buy their products and put them together yourself. This idea of seeing a vision and then completing it gives you a feeling of pure satisfaction and success. This is like what Willy chases throughout the whole play. He wants the satisfaction of being successful and having the perfect life he’s always dreamed of. Just like the idea of capitalism in America and the Theme in the play of capitalism, Ikea allows you to create whatever you want to and follow whatever dream and desire you have for your life.

Cameron Aaron - Supreme

I think that the supreme video relates to Death of a Salesman based off image. For people buying supreme and other “hype beast” brands they are hoping to put of this image of wealth and swag. They are hoping that by buying these items, people of society view them with a greater status. This is like how Willy does things to be viewed as a great father and a successful salesman even though he is not. Often people buy these items at a retail price and wear them to look like they bought them for resale, and they have enough money to pay $1000 for a hoodie. When in reality, most people buying these things maxed their credit card or spent their whole paycheck in order to put off this status that isn’t real. Willy borrows money from a friend and brings it home and says it’s his commission from that week’s sale, when he really just borrowed the money and isn’t telling the truth about where it came from.
