Many of the families living in poverty at my school have one or both parents working multiple jobs just to keep basic needs met. Both my parents (Mexican) and my husband's (Polish) were completely uninvolved in our education- not because they didn't see it as important, but because everyone does their job. Parents' job was to be parents, schools' jobs were to educate children. The findings actually suggest that wealthier individuals are more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs than are poor individuals.
