They used some of it to bathe, and eventhough after it was dirty it was still drinkable to keep them alive.

They rationed the food to last them more.

A miner would line up plastic cups and put one spoon of tuna in each cup for the miners, and put water in it to make it into a broth. Each miner recieved two cookies.

They used industrial water from one of the trucks, and motor oil for flavor.

men slept in the refuge area and others spread out. After a while the space began to stink . One Miner compared it to being worse than a dead corpse.

After a while they only had enough for one cookie each miner every other day.

Men started getting frustrated not knowing what to do, others were getting sick, and some were scared of the others.

They finally knew what it was like for animals to be trapped in a cage.

They got out after 69 days. There were some that were injured and sick. When they got out their lives changed. They were considered heroes. They were trapped underground longer than any human being ever has been.

               -Angie <3

Although the minors were trapped underground for 69 days, they were able to handle the situation calmly with very high expectations. Initially the miners tried to escape through the ventilation shaft system, but the ladders required by mining safety codes were missing. It was a bit later that the shafts became inaccessible. Despite many attempts, the shaft could not re-opened until the installation of the escape ladders. There survival depended on the miners mental and physical abilities. They were responding to conditions in an orderly fashion. They organized themselves by by sleeping, having recreations, and by saying lots of prayers. Although they only had a steel forced safe room that contained provisions to feed 25 men for 2 days, they were able to stretch the amount of food for over 2 days. Some difficulties they faced were anger, trouble sleeping, not turning crazy, stress, and many more. One good thing that they encountered was that not only did they cope but they also had physiological benefits.
