Though all things foul would wear the brows of grace, Yet Grace must still look so.

Initial reaction: Although this quote wasn't on my list of preferred quotes, I picked it because I liked the wording, and the repetition of the word grace. This repetition emphasized the word grace, which caught my attention. I thought that the quote had the theme of appearance versus reality of Macbeth, and once I looked into the context more, I realized it was.

1. While I was sitting at my dining room table one evening, I said the quote just out of the blue to my 11 year old brother, who was also working on homework. He didn't even look up or think it was weird that I just said that so randomly. Instead, he sounded impressed saying "Whoa, did you write that yourself? You could be Shakespeare when you grow up!"
2. Another day while my other brother was doing dishes, I walked up to him and said the quote. All he said was "blah blah blah" and didn't ask about it any further, so I assumed he thought it was boring.
3. Before AP Gov started, I turned to my friend who isn't in AP Lit, and just told her the quote. She then looked at me with a confused/disgusted look. Her response was short and not so sweet, "that's gross". I don't think she likes Shakespeare.

1. How the North Korean government and administration have brainwashed the citizens of their country to believe that their leader, Kim Jong Un, is invincible. They are also brainwashed into believing that there are no problems with the world, because they are forbidden from any contact with people in foreign countries. In the article that I read, it was stated that people aren't even allowed to walk around North Korea without being led in a small guided group. The author of the article even included that one of her thoughts while visiting there was "I'm scared". This relates to how Banquo was shielded from all of Macbeth's evil plans, therefore he wasn't able to be warned to fight against Macbeth. His downfall came too quickly because of his lack of knowledge of Macbeth's evil nature. (https://www.bordersofadventure.com/travelling-to-north-korea-where-preconceptions-and-reality-collide/)
2. Another news article that I found was on the topic of Photoshop and the "destruction of the American Body image". This news story argued that Photoshop has caused harmful thoughts in Americans such as "unrealistic body image expectations, eating disorders and other emotional problems". This relates to this quote because of the them of appearance versus reality and the fact that people are perceiving the wrong images as right. This is harmful not only to those people individually, but to a whole society.
3. In an article called "fake news floods the Philippines", the New York Times elaborates on how there is so much "fake news, conspiracy theories, and harassment" all over the internet in the Philippines. But at this point, no one really cares if the news is correct or not, they just want to know if the public supports it or now. And sadly, many citizens don't know the difference between right or wrong news, so they end up spreading a lot more of what is wrong, rather than what is right. This relates to Macbeth because before the characters in the play suspect Macbeth of the evil events that are taking place, they place the blame of Duncan's murder on the servants and also on Duncan's sons, who fled to England and Ireland as soon as they could after the death of their father. All this time they were spreading awareness for the wrong people, when they should've been keeping a close watch on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/24/opinion/fake-news-philippines.html

Summary from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone- "This is the tale of Harry Potter, an ordinary 11-year-old boy serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Hagrid, the grounds keeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241527/plotsummary
This quote relates to Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by JK Rowling. In the Harry Potter, professor Quirrell, a teacher at Hogwarts, is seemingly innocent and nice throughout most of the movie. But at the end he finally exposes himself to Harry and reveals that he had been aiding Voldemort to try to bring him back to life. This is similar to Macbeth because professor Quirrell is like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. They both hide their dark thoughts and evil plans from everyone else in the play, fooling everyone with their supposed innocence. But when Macbeth is finally caught, he is taken down by the "good" characters, just as Quirrell was defeated by Harry.

This picture relates to Macbeth because just as its difficult to tell a real diamond from a fake one, it was very difficult for any characters in Macbeth to realize that he was evil, and when they finally found out, it was too late to fix anything that had already happened.

This picture relates to Macbeth because the iceberg looks a lot less dangerous at surfcae level, but underneath, it could easily destroy a ship very unexpectedly. Similarly, Macbeth was not suspected as a murderer until too many people were already dead.

Final Reaction to quote

My final reaction to the quote is similar to my initial reaction because I thought that it was about appearance and reality at the start and at the end of the assignment. Though, I was able to expand my knowledge of appearance versus reality in our world today which I though was really interesting. The connections that I made to our society today helped me understand the play better as well. The significance of this quote to anyone would be that you can't judge people or situations based on the superficial details in order to get your most accurate conclusion. The significance to Shakespeare would be that because the theme of appearance versus reality is so prominent in Macbeth, that his deception to all of the other characters was very important to the story line. To me, this quote means similar things to what I said above, just that you should know someone's full story before either putting a label on them or not putting a label on them.
