The book begins when Sydney Carton spends his time working behind the scenes on legal cases for Stryver, never sharing the attention or receiving the credit. During this time, he was occupied by crippling regrets. He saw his life as wasted and himself as a loathsome creature, doomed to die in obscurity. But then Carton met Lucie Manette, who gave him new purpose. Her compassion and kindness inspired him to do whatever he could to protect her, her family, and her happy life that Carton knew he could never belong in. This new, determined Carton turned a page in his life, eventually sacrificing everything for Lucie, and in doing so fulfilling the one thing that could redeem himself from his regrets.

Jarvis Lorry is an elderly employee of Tellson's Bank in London. He is a methodical and business-minded man who ensures that his own feelings do not interfere with his profession. But having a close relationship with the Manettes, he occasionally helps them, although he always remains primarily loyal to Tellson's. The duality of his Lorry is compelling. He leads two lives; one is devoted to the Manettes, harboring deep admiration for the virtue of Lucie, and the other is strictly professional and orderly. When these two Lorrys collide is when his true character is revealed.

Lucie Manette exemplifies every aspect of good. She is described as beautiful and compassionate, and nearly everyone that meets her displays great affection towards her. She is the daughter of Alexandre Manette, but she was taken to England by Mr. Lorry at a young age when her father was imprisoned. Dickens enjoys referring to her as the golden thread, tying the lives of the characters together with her outstanding kindness that inspires great things. Of the many suitors, she marries Charles Darnay, who is likely the only one worthy of her. As their marriage progresses, Darnay becoming more like her, as many had, due to her virtue.

Arguably the main protagonist, Darnay exemplifies courage and virtue. He is involved in many events throughout the story, chiefly due to his sense of justice. Darnay, originally St. Evrémonde, was born into French nobility and was in line to inherit great wealth from his uncle, the Marquis St. Evrémonde. But recognizing the depravity that had taken hold of France, he abandoned his lineage to live in England with Lucie Manette and her father. Yet this does mean he turned his back on France, and he travels back to France, knowing the risks, to rescue a servant of his who was imprisoned. He is a brave man who despite all the challenges he is faced with, perseveres and pursues justice.
