We’re proud to celebrate Volunteer Week as a tribute to our dedicated volunteer team.

Community Fridges are vital local food recycling hubs. Operated entirely by volunteers, they are turning the tide on food waste by ensuring good food goes to some of our neediest families, and is not just dumped into expensive landfill. This provides a lifeline to those struggling to cope with their bills, as well as helping the Environment.

Unlike a traditional food bank, a community fridge is open to absolutely everyone. There are no referrals, no vouchers, and no eligibility criteria.

This Volunteers' Week, why not pay a visit to your local community fridge? You can find your nearest fridge using the Hubbub map tool. You can also find out more about food recycling, and how to minimise the amount of your own food that goes in the bin by visiting the article on our Recycling page.

From 13th–16th August, children and families affected by parental imprisonment will come together at Hill End, Oxfordshire for a weekend of connection, laughter, campfires, activities and support.

We’re looking for individuals, groups and teams who would like to get involved — whether that’s helping prepare meals, running activities, supporting families, putting up tents or simply bringing warmth and kindness to the weekend.

For many children, this is the first time they meet others who truly understand.

We are holding a cuppa and cake event to celebrate, and to invite anyone interested in volunteering with us to come and chat to the friendly team.

What started out as a simple Facebook page in the pandemic has grown to a constituted community group with 9k members. A committee of 8 and 50+ volunteers al helping to facilitate roughly 10 events each week! Walking, running and cycling - from Health Walks to big hill adventures days, something for everyone. We will be having our yearly thank you celebrations Friday 5th June 🥳

From getting stuck in behind-the-scenes with objects at our Stores facility, helping to maintain our beautiful grounds and grow our gorgeous Medieval Herb Garden at Pontefract Castle, to getting stuck in with a wide range of activities and events across our sites, we couldn't do it without our volunteers. 💜

PKD (polycystic kidney disease) is a genetic condition in which multiple cysts develop, primarily in the kidneys, but it can also affect the liver, heart and brain. It is the most common genetic kidney disease and the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. There is currently no cure.

The PKD Charity is the first and only UK charity dedicated solely to improving the lives of people affected by PKD. Since 2000, we’ve supported individuals and families to live life as fully as possible, providing year-round support, information, tools and inspiration.

We are a small charity with big ambitions: campaigning to improve services and understanding, and funding research into better treatments and ultimately a cure. All the information we provide is current, accurate and evidence-based.

Across the UK fire and rescue sector, volunteers contribute hundreds of thousands of hours each year supporting prevention work, engaging local communities and helping people stay safe from fire, road and water risks. Their contribution strengthens services, extends reach and helps protect the most vulnerable before an emergency ever occurs. 

That is the idea behind micro volunteering: flexible, accessible, often short bursts of help that add up to something meaningful. No long-term commitment, no rigid schedule, and in many cases, no need to even leave home. Just a small action that makes a real impact.

For many people, time is the biggest barrier to volunteering. Work, family responsibilities and other commitments can make it feel out of reach. Micro or bite-sized volunteering changes that by offering opportunities that fit around people’s lives, not the other way around.

During Volunteers’ Week, we want to shine a light on this often overlooked way of getting involved, because for many people, it could be exactly the entry point they have been waiting for.

How Diabetes UK is making volunteering more accessible

One of the strongest examples of micro volunteering in action is the Impact Volunteer programme at Diabetes UK, designed to remove barriers that stop people getting involved.

The role is built around a simple idea. Many people want to support an important cause, but their lives are busy, unpredictable or shaped by work, caring responsibilities or health. Instead of expecting volunteers to fit around a fixed role, Diabetes UK has created one that fits around the volunteer.

Impact Volunteers take on small, flexible tasks each week, often taking just a few minutes and are usually completed from home. This makes the role accessible to people who might otherwise feel unable to volunteer. Each action might seem small, but together they create significant reach and awareness.

What do Impact Volunteers do?

Tasks vary, but might include:

• Sharing awareness campaigns on social media

• Attending short online sessions

• Displaying posters in community spaces

• Amplifying content to reach new audiences

• Providing feedback on campaigns

This model works because it respects people’s time. It allows people to stay involved, even when their availability changes.

This model works because it respects people’s time. Volunteers can get involved in a way that suits their lives, without the pressure of long-term commitments.

ESOL – Making a difference closer to home

Micro volunteering is also making a real impact locally through a partnership between TyneCoast College and the North Tyneside Employment and Skills Service.

Learners studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) have taken part in short, flexible volunteering activities while balancing study, work and family life. For many, it was their first experience of volunteering.

What did they do?

They have:

• Written cards for people undergoing cancer treatment through From Me To You

• Designed quizzes to support Warm Welcome spaces

• Created craft packs for children in the community

“Even small acts of kindness can have a meaningful and lasting impact.”

Why it matters

These activities also helped learners build confidence, practise English and feel more connected to their community.

“They found simple ways to give back while building confidence.”

Across our 300+ Societies in the UK and abroad, volunteers give their time, skills and energy to help preserve, celebrate and share the arts and heritage in their communities. From organising lectures and cultural visits, to welcoming new members, protecting our national heritage, recording local history and facilitating local arts projects, their contribution is vital to everything The Arts Society achieves.

Whether members volunteer as part of a Society committee or out in the community, everyone helps to create spaces where people can come together through a shared love of the arts. Their enthusiasm, generosity and dedication make a real difference. Thank you!

We have so many stories to tell and lots of memories to look back on. We can foster around our commitments and get lots of support from the team when we do."

One evening watching television there  was a documentary all about Young Carers. It was very emotional to watch as we ourselves had been the main carers for my father who had alzheimer's! 

At the end of the programme, Colin himself was quite emotional and his comment was that we had been carers at an age when one expects to care for someone, but he couldn't imagine having to care for someone whilst being as young as those featured in the documentary!

After a short time we became GYC Volunteers. We have preferred to be involved with the fundraising rather than the young carers as we both like mixing & meeting & promoting the charity!

Over the years we have helped at many events, bucket collections, family fun days, art sales, Tewkesbury Abbey tea room, refreshments at conferences and many others! We've also put on a Coffee/Tea/Cake/ open garden, which raised a good amount of money and a Christmas lunch for our village community  which also made an excellent profit!!

Sadly we've not been as available of late as we have become more involved in our local community and though we both hate to admit it looking after our house and large garden takes a lot more of our time and energy than 14 years ago!!  

Goodness what happened to all those spare hours we thought we would  have after retirement!!

For 30 years, volunteers have been at the heart of everything we do. Together, they have helped support more than 50,000 children, delivered over 750,000 hours of reading support, and worked with around 250 schools across Nottinghamshire.

Every week, our volunteers help children build confidence, develop reading skills and discover a love of reading that can last a lifetime. Through encouragement, patience and consistency, they make a real difference to children’s lives.

The Interact club have raised money and awareness for causes ranging from diabetes to sponsoring shoes for school children in Uganda.

They have even been awarded the Young Citizens Peacemaker award by the Rotary club in recognition for their work and have been made a 'flagship', with the Rotary Club rolling out similar clubs as a result. Marvellous work!

Last night some of the TrackAdog Team volunteers got together to celebrate Volunteers Week with an evening of bowling at Ryde Superbowl.

There's nothing quite like a bit of friendly competition to bring a team together, and judging by the laughter, cheering, and occasional questionable bowling technique, a great time was had by all!

Our volunteers give up countless hours throughout the year to help reunite lost dogs with their families, attend training sessions, support events, fundraise, and keep TrackAdog running. It was lovely to spend an evening simply enjoying each other's company and celebrating the amazing people who make our team what it is.

As for the bowling results... well, what happens at the bowling alley stays at the bowling alley! We won't be discussing winners, losers, gutter balls, or claims of "that pin definitely moved on its own!"

A huge thank you to every one of our wonderful volunteers. TrackAdog simply wouldn't exist without your dedication, kindness, and support.

I’ve been exploring ways to happier since I was a teenager, and have had had many adventures and struggles over the years, including a failed quest to become ‘spiritually enlightened’!

In 2013, when I was 31, I heard about the Action for Happiness movement and this was a profound turning point for three reasons:

1)      I found a way to channel my enthusiasm for happiness into volunteering to support others. That felt deeply fulfilling in a way that my previous search for personal happiness hadn’t.

2)      The evidence-based ‘10 Keys to Happier Living’ that underpin the movement helped give me a framework for practical actions that make a genuine positive difference.

3)      I found my ‘tribe’ – like-minded people who are passionate about taking action for a happier and kinder world.

So far, in my 13 years' volunteering with AFH, I have helped facilitate hundreds of meaningful events, met thousands of wonderful people and have a feast of memorable moments to cherish.

I’m now also fortunate to be a volunteer coordinator for AFH which means I get to interact regularly with the amazing volunteer community.

I find this deeply heartwarming, inspiring and nourishing.

I’m deeply thankful to have discovered Action for Happiness and can’t imagine ever wanting to stop volunteering! I strongly encourage anyone curious about volunteering to try it, especially for organisations and movements that resonate with your passions and interests. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, sharing practical advice, or helping someone navigate life after injury, their impact is truly life‑changing.

Spinal Injuries Scotland exists to support individuals and families at every stage of their journey from hospital to home and beyond. We work to improve quality of life, promote independence, and ensure that no one faces a spinal cord injury alone. Our volunteers play a crucial role in making this mission a reality, bringing empathy, understanding, and hope to those who need it most.

To all of our volunteers: thank you. Your generosity of time and spirit makes a lasting difference every single day, and we are proud to have you as part of our community

I also volunteer with Police Scotland Youth Volunteering (PSYV) and I have assisted the community in many Police Scotland events including the local Alloa Half Marathon, Race for Life, Alloa Fireworks Display & events at Tulliallan Police College. I have accrued 32.5 hours volunteering in a short space of time. This is also logged with the Saltire Awards.

I am also an ambassador at my school, Lornshill Academy and I am part of the Fit for Girls (FFG) program in conjunction with Sport Scotland. This promotes inclusion for women in sport at my secondary school and pushes out to primary schools in the community to teach lessons on the subject.

I have been nominated for Young Volunteer of the Year for Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface (CTSI), 2 years in a row and I have been invited to Alloa town hall on 23rd June 2026 where I will be presented with the Physical Education, Activity and School Sports (PEPASS) Volunteer of the Year Award.

To date I have 312.5 Hours logged for Saltire Scotland. As I am only 14 years old and I feel very proud of this and I hope I am fantastic role model for young women and women empowerment.

After experiencing hearing loss later in life, Philip wanted to find a way to make a difference. What started with volunteering to test hearing loops soon became a rewarding journey of connection, confidence and self-discovery.

"Volunteering for Hearing Link has made me understand who I am. Because I understand deafness, I understand what my own needs are, which I didn't know before."

Through supporting our community activities, webinars and Helpdesk service, Philip helps others while continuing to grow himself.

This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating our phenomenal team of gardening volunteers who help make The Grange and Beatrice Wright Centre look absolutely beautiful all year round.

Through strong winds, downpours of rain, and even the occasional spell of unseasonal sunshine, their dedication never wavers. Thanks to their hard work, our grounds remain welcoming, colourful, and well cared for throughout the year.

But don't just take our word for it - countless people regularly comment on how wonderful our gardens look and on the calm, tranquil spaces our volunteers help to create.

We are incredibly grateful for the time, care, and commitment our gardening volunteers give. Their efforts create spaces that bring joy, comfort, and pride to everyone who visits.

Here’s an example of how we make a difference to older people in the New Forest. Daphne is an older lady who lives alone and has physical and sight challenges.

Our Support team were able to help Daphne successfully claim Attendance Allowance, and while they were visiting her, she shared how lonely and isolated she was feeling 😢

That’s where the Befriending team came to the rescue! 🛟

Daphne was thrilled to be matched with one of our lovely volunteer befrienders who now regularly visits her 🤗

Daphne says, “HOPe has made such a difference to my life, and I now look ahead with more optimism.”

Helping people like Daphe is why everyone at HOPe works so hard, but we’d be lost without our generous and kind volunteers 👏

The ‘Malus Royalty’ was one of two red crab apple trees assigned to their Majesties 🍎

One was planted by their Majesties HRH King Charles III and HRH Queen Camilla two weeks ago and the other by The King's Trust & Hillsborough Castle and Gardens volunteers and staff in celebration of the Trust’s 50th anniversary 🎉 🌴

We planted history and every single volunteer got to place a bit of sod at the root. In my mind it’s a powerful symbol of hope, new beginnings, and investing in the future because it requires care to grow into a mature sturdy tree. It represents endurance, personal development, and the lasting legacy we leave for future generations…

In my humble opinion, this symbolises EXACTLY the opportunities we provide for our Young People with support from volunteers and staff to grow mature and strong themselves 🪏 🌴 🌱 🪴

🌴 Legacy and remembrance: this represents life continuing and a memory that grows stronger and deeper with time.

🌴 Faith in tomorrow: As the old proverb goes, "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit". A seedling ‘symbolises profound selflessness, trust, and taking action for the benefit of those who come after us.’ 💚

🌴 Connection to nature: It is a tangible act of conservation, symbolising commitment to healing the environment (and ourselves), promoting sustainability, and maintaining the circle of life 🌱

I can’t wait to go back and see the ceremonial plaque that’s being made along with their Majesties one. All thanks to Mark Larmour CBE partnerships manager and claire Woods gardening manager of the estate who understood exactly what we were looking to achieve and made it happen 🪧

FYI there’s about 200 ceremonial trees planted at Hillsborough which is our only Historic Royal Palaces in NI 🏰 and now we’ve added another one 💚

We all loved every single second of this once in a lifetime moment in history 🌴 🌱 🪏 🌴 🌱 🪴

Our patient user group Us for You continues to work really hard to improve the experience for other patients. They have reviewed and improved the food menus, created tips information booklets, helped to select artwork and the decoration of some areas and many more things. THANK YOU.

To our wonderful patient information volunteers who meet cancer patients, lend a listening ear and help support them to navigate this challenge time. THANK YOU.

Finally, our four legged friends and their two legged owners - Therapy dogs. They visit the treatment suites and inpatients spreading immense joy and love to all. THANK YOU.

The day we championed common ground. In a world that can often feel increasingly divided, it is a reminder of what unites us. Across the UK, young people are leading change in their communities, shaping decisions, building connections and creating positive action on the issues that matter to them.

Organisations were encouraged to sign the Power of Youth Charter and affirm their commitment to not only hearing the voices of young people, but embedding them

To accompany this, 4 case studies were published which exemplify great partnership working, providing rea life examples of how this can be achieved.
