We first found out on Christmas morning when I ate too much sugar and I was rushed to the hospital when the doctors told me that I had gone into what they called a "diabetic coma". Which is when your body shuts down from the increasing amounts of glucose in your blood because your pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to control the amount of glucose you are taking in. My mom and I were scared at first but she comforted me even though I could still tell she was frightened.

Today was my first day at my new school! It went good but I was nervous about meeting new people. I walked in the classroom and went to my desk. My teacher was really nice and she helped me give my diabetes stuff to the staff for emergencies (my finger-stick [it takes a bit of blood from my finger. it doesn't hurt!]This tool is used to check if my blood sugar is too high or too low). I also gave them my insulin for if my blood sugar is low. I then went back to class and I met a girl named Marie. I was surprised when I found out there was another girl with type one diabetes since only 1.25 million American kids are diagnosed with it. That's only 5% of all diagnosed cases!!! She has diabetes too so we talked about our struggles. It was fun because nobody really understands what happens in my everyday life. New friend achieved!

I have always been afraid of the doctor's office and now I have to visit so many! Luckily they're all so sweet and explain everything very thoroughly. My top three favorite doctors are my endocrinologist (which is a professional that studies the endocrine system). She gives me the insulin that I have to pump into my blood because my pancreas does not produce enough. Next is my Certified Diabetic Educator who is so motivating; she educates me on my treatments and how to monitor my glucose levels with my glucometer, which is a tool I use to see if my blood glucose levels are too high or too low. If it is too high I will pump myself with insulin. If it is too low I will eat something with sugar to raise back to normal. Lastly, is my dietitian. He informs me of the food I can and cannot eat. I am so grateful for my dietitian without him I would never know that I shouldn't consume high amounts of carbohydrates like soda which has lots of sugar that would increase my glucose levels.

I went camping with Marie and my mom. I've never been camping because of my diabetes since it is risky because many things can cause me to go into a diabetic coma. I could go into a diabetic coma because I could have too much glucose in my blood that my body cannot break down. We sang songs in the car and we made our own tent out of sticks and leaves. It was finally lunch time and my mom pricked my finger and checked my blood sugar. My mom noticed that my blood sugar was high so she reached for my insulin. I take insulin because my pancreas doesn't make it for me. The insulin is injected and it goes into the blood and breaks down the glucose (so I don't go into a diabetic coma). But when my mom reached for the insulin she realized that it hadn't been included in our camping supplies. My mom panicked and she gets in the car and goes home for my insulin (don't worry, she left a park ranger with us). I am grateful for my mom. She just wants the best for me. She even drove for a straight 2 hours just so I could have my insulin. I was starting to feel lightheaded just as my mom came back to the campsite with my insulin. She's my hero!!

My mom truly helps me cope with my illness and teaches me the steps I have to take everyday. Example, being how every morning we eat our egg whites and split a sausage and grapefruit. We then go on a jog around the block or go to the zoo and walk around for an hour or so. She likes to keep exercising fun and not make it seem like a chore. My dad on the other hand, he left when I was only 3 months old. He noticed that I had type one diabetes trait and he thought it would be "too hard to handle". Luckily I have my amazing mom who is my biggest fan. I love you mom!

Sleepovers are a struggle for me. Many girls my age constantly have sleepover parties and I want to go but I can't gain enough courage to do so. I'm always embarrassed about my diabetes especially since the tools I use, my glucagon and insulin pen, are scary and I'm scared the other kids will make fun of me. I'm glad I have a friend like Marie and a supporter like my mom. If only I was born normal. I would be able to go to sleepovers without being embarrassed. All my friends can indulge in sweet foods and eat all the junk food. But I have to stay home, check my blood sugar, and measure my food. Life is so unfair. :(
