The difference is that the train station sees visitors who are using it for a certain purpose, while the Hall House has visitors who only want to learn about history. The Hall House was built in 1820, so it will turn 200 next year! 3)What persuasive information can we give people to be interested in when going downtown? Answer: 1) People love to shop and visit the stores in downtown, and see the Bell Tower. People also like to visit the Hall House or Maxwell Chamber House, or the Rowan Museum and the Historic Salisbury Station. 2) Some places get destroyed because people think the buildings can not be saved or used anymore--but that is rarely true! Restoring buildings to use them for new or different purposes can be time-consuming and expensive, but it can be done! 3) I think one of the most amazing things about Salisbury's downtown is the vibrancy. We have multiple theaters, a number of shops, tons of restaurants, and all of those take life in historic buildings. 3. Why isn’t Salisbury doing anything with the vacant buildings? Answer: 1) Salisbury is a very old town, where lots of historic people and events have happened. 2) We should all know more about Salisbury for a couple reasons. Firstly, because we all live near it and want to be able to tell people that where we come from is really cool! Secondly, because the more pride we all have in the cities and towns we live in/near, the more invested we become in making the community a better place. The more I know about the history of Salisbury, the happier I am to tell people about why I like to live here. 3) Salisbury is trying to move more shops and businesses into vacant buildings, but that can be difficult when businesses are not able to pay to use the space. The City is working on it though!

  • Why is Salisbury unique? Answer: I think the best way to make history interesting is to find the parts/buildings/events that YOU like the most, or want to know more about, and focus on that. Another way to make it interesting is to put it into a format that you like the most. For example, I LOVE to read, so I write about history so that other people can read it. My sister hates reading, and LOVES art and photography, so she takes pictures of historic places and tells people about history that way.

    How can we pull more people to this area? Answer: I decided to work at the train station because this is where the office for Historic Salisbury Foundation is! I took the job as the director of HSF because I love history and historic preservation, and felt this job would be the best place for me to engage in the community. And I love Salisbury, so I knew I would love living here. I find the combination of history and progress really unique about Salisbury. Salisbury has a lot of ideas that are more common in bigger cities--like multiple theaters, art galleries, nightlife, breweries, restaurants, and downtown residential spaces. But all of these ideas are implemented in historic buildings in a smaller town, which makes it really special.
