A young black girl is feeling sad and insecure because of how dark she is. She sees that she is a darker shaden than her family and tries to find ways to make herself lighter.
The author created this book to teach kids to embrace their uniqueness and knows how it feels.
The illustration is very consistent with the story. It reminds me of a dream sequence where everything is glittery and pretty. The coloring shows each skin color that Sulwe is surrounded by and it heightens her difference.
Sulwe has the power. She has the power to make or break herself. She overcomes her insecurity when her mom calls her a star. When she starts to wonder how she is a star, she is introduced to the story of nigh and day. This allows her to embrace her skin color and love herself.
This is a topic that most kids struggle with. I have come across a lot of kids who are suprisingly insecure about their skin and this book can show them to embrace how unique they are. It gives them the confidence they need.

This story is about a girl who goes through how she styles her hair. She uses the term "crown" and it emphasizes how important her hair is to her.
The illustrations fit the words that she compares her hair to. For example, she says she likes to wear her crown in twists like licorice. On the page there are licorice to match her words. It heightens the importance of how she feels confident in herself.
She definitely has the power in the story because she knows what she likes. She has embraced her crown and the many ways she can do her hair.
Young children like her can relate because it can give them ideas on how to manage their hair. It can give them confidence that there are others that wear the same hairstyles that they do.

Vaness Brantley-Newton tells a beautiful story about how even though there are things that are different about people, we are the same. We are people who want to be happy and people who have their own beauty & wants. She goes about it in a way that everyone can relate to it.
The illustrations are very pleasing and it goes along with the story. It shows young black girl who tells little vignettes on how she and other people are alike.
This story is meant to show that everyone is different, but we all have similarities. Everyone has the power to show they care no matter what race they are.
This isa great book for children because it highlights similarities. Any child of any culture can look and read this book and relate to it. In fact, it goes to show that we are humans. We decide what "color" we want to be. We can be expressed by yellow through happiness. We are all just a canvas and we decide the colors.
