The other social studies teachers at my school don’t understand the United States history state test as much as I do so they don’t always teach the most important content in their classes. I want to make sure that they focus on the most important information that students will need to know for United States history. This also helps me understand what students should already know when they enter my class. More specifically, I have worked with Ms. Shock planning lessons together on Fridays and having her teacher-specific readings that I select. The reading that she goes over covers the history standards for my class and the reading standards for her class. I met with the other teachers who taught the eleventh grade and we would discuss students who we were struggling with in our classes. The idea was that teachers who figured out how to manage certain students could assist the teachers who were struggling with those same students. Being able to meet with other teachers who taught the same students as I did allowed me to learn different management techniques that really helped me develop as a teacher. All teachers have different strengths and weaknesses and working with other teachers can help fill in the gaps of the weaknesses. It also creates more consistency among the staff. Collaboration can lead teachers to have similar discipline policies and procedures which make it easier for students.
