Buddhist caves have endured countless assaults over the past 100 years. Earthquakes, floods, even Russian soldiers. "The Mogao Grottoes received 26,000 visitors in 1979, the first year they were open to the public. This year, up to 1 million tourists are expected."
I think tourists are a threat to the Buddhist caves because inside the caves, are an extensive library of Buddhist manuscripts, sutras and secular records in languages including Chinese, Tibetan, Uighur and Khotanese, and many (tourists) may accidentally damage the manuscripts.
