Ratliff uses examples like this to help understand the concept of Linking. Linking is the combining of musical tones and pitches to create a new uniform sound, however more importantly is the fact that Linking is not just one definitive thing but that it can create limitless sounds.Ratliff helps clear away some confusion when he talks about Varese, a writer who best described this element through the words of Nathaniel Arbiter who stated: "But In spite of the limited variety of internal structures, the external forms of crystals are limitless. ". Linking is the subtleness of difference, and I and everyone else see this when we listen to other artists, and see how they have incorporated there own musical styles, each different than the other, at times similar, but never the same. This uniqueness can also be seen when Ratliff describes the element of exclusivity.
