The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
* It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

* Increasing immunisation rates in pregnancy against seasonal influenza must remain a public health priority (MBRRACE, 2016).

* Can lead to secondary infections such as pneumonia and sepsis which increase risk of maternal death (MBRRACE, 2016).

* Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections are examples of complications from influenza. The flu can make chronic health problems worse. For example, people with asthma may experience asthma attacks while they have the flu.

* Flu is more likely to cause severe illness in pregnant women than in women who are not pregnant.

* Changes in the immune system, heart, and lungs during pregnancy make pregnant women (and women up to two weeks postpartum) more prone to severe illness from flu, including illness resulting in hospitalization.

* Flu also may be harmful for a pregnant woman’s developing baby. A common flu symptom is fever, which may be associated with neural tube defects and other adverse outcomes for a developing baby.
