Residents in the area do frequent the space with their children but the deeply manicured format of the garden offers little space to stretch out and play. Moreover, buildings have been constructed on all sides so there is very little ventilation. in the hot months, it is virtually impossible to spend time there, especially considering that it is closed in the evening hours at the day's coolest moment. Beyond the manicured format, the real issue that undermines the space's value is the high level of urban density around it. "Beirut is a city that breaths off the sea" once said Lady Sursock. The rectangle area to the right has been dug out for the construction of a building but has been not worked on in years. the triangle area is seemingly abandoned but given the value of land in this area, it is surely private. The density of buildings in the Manara/Koreitem corridor blocks wind and light but here a corridor of wind and the evening sun can reach the site. Despite its unkempt state, many residents come here to walk and take in the views. The guards from the construction site have positioned a table in the triangle area, which is a bit of a hill, and they play cards and smoke shisha in the evenings. An old resident of Koreitem recalls that when he was a child, this entire area was farmland and you could see the sea from all directions. The Corniche is probably Beirut's greatest jewel. It is the only space that offers the ability for people to frequent it at all hours for exercise and recreation. In the mornings and evenings, one will see a mix of sects mingling. Sundays are particularly popular when whole families will come with their speakers, coffee makers, and shisha pipes and pass time socializing. The Corniche follows an east-west trajectory making sunrises (although partially blocked by mountains) and sunsets particularly stunning. It use to be lined with deciduous trees until they were replaced by palms by Hariri, which offer somewhat less shade. The rectangle highlighted in green is a private plot that is bordered off by a metal fence. It is likely owned by a hotel company that did not build there due to the war and since has been in legal limbo. Most of Beirut's coastline has become privatized and only accessible for a steep fee save a few beaches around Tyr and Anfeh. There is much to say and much that has been said about Martyr's square and the downtown. Martyr's Square used to be surrounded by cafes and cinemas, with the heart of government to the west at Riad el Solh and the souks to the north-west. Since its destruction in the civil war, the majority of Martyr's Square has been used as parking lots. In any post-war context, the first priority might go to reconstructing the symbolic heart of the city but the fact that this has not been done shows that there is not in agreement on what the symbolic center has been done.
