This book is about a girl named Liegh when shes talking to a friend named Axel she kisses him and feels like it was a mistake to do that so she goes home. When her dad is standing on the porch with the cops there with blood on his mouth he talks about her mother. She describes the taste as sweet and salty due to them eating chocolate popcorn. She gets a bad feeling and runs home, to find out that her mother comitted suicide. They go inside the home and she screams loudly at the sight of blood and her mother's legs. They look for the suicide note, the father finds it and apparently she stopped taking her anti depressents. Leigh is now deperessed and started to sleep on the couch, one day there is a knock at the door. Leigh opens it to find nothing until she looked up and a phinix, she knows it's her mother. the Phinix leaves behind a feather that glows orange and red. Leigh takes a trip to Taipei to find her grandparents. She has never seen them before and her father is coming with her. They get there and the sky looked beautiful but it was how even thought it was almost night. They arrive at the location of the grandparents, the father starts to look for something violently but as soon as he finds it. A old lady opens the door to find Leigh and her father. It's the grandmother, she calls out Liegh's name. They get up and greet her, They go into the house to meet the grandfather. They put their luggage in the guest bedroom. They talk with the grandparents to find out how they have been and what the weather has been for the past few days. The grandmother says that the weather has been helping them grow more fruit than before and with addition there is rain that has been carried there by a resent typhon. Leigh runs to the guest restoom and pulls out a box and brings it to the grandparents. The protagonist is dealing with her family's emotions. Her father left her after talking with his mother-in-law and wont tell Leigh what happened. She doesn't know how to communicate with her grandparents due to her father being the translator. She is given a big necklace that can possibly be her mothers, and her grandparents are trying to communicate their feelings and how they care about her. But Leigh doesn't understand, she can only understand little bits of their language. P.S. the grandparents speak mandarin. Also the location that they have been at so far is the grandparent's home. They eat dinner or lunch or breakfast, i'm not sure which ones. 

The story moves to a different place. It seems to be like a market at a park or just a market in a store. They get boba tea and relax in the park. Leigh is reminding her self that if her friend Axel was at the park with her, he would take out his pastels and try to make 2 pages work of drawings of how beautiful the park looked.

The father known as Baineng left the house and is somewhere but we don't know where he is staying. The reason he left was because he broke the promise that him and Leigh's mother made on their wedding day. He was the one that translated for Leigh, but after he left she has been having trouble talking to her grandparents. She can only understand and speak very little. When she was in the guest bedroom she felt like opening the closet. She did so to find a incense box. The tip looked black, like really black. 

She hid it after her grandparents slowly made themselves visible. Later on in the story she opens the box and finds some kind of lighter. She uses it to light the incense when she does the room fills up with black smoke. The whole room is filled with this smoke and Leigh realizes that she is at home. She heads down the stairs, to find her mother playing the piano. She smells some kind of coconut scent. She spots two children and realizes that she is seeing/ moving in her mother's memory. The father walks in and say what smells good. The mother walks over to the father and kisses his nose, she goes to the kitchen and comes out with some food. Leigh tries to touch her mother but her hand dissapears. Then she gets sent to her father's memory. I don't know whats going to happen. She spots an elderly woman call out her dad's name.Then liegh tells her dad and realizes it is her grandma so they go inside with her and  the dad explains the trip. Liegh pulls out the box which causes her dad to get upset.The grand ma talks to lieghs dad and translates it for liegh to understand saying how she wasn't supposed to get it and was supposed to be burnt so the mom could take it to the after life. liegh tells her dad to tell her grandma about the bird but instead tells her that was enough.So liegh trys to tell them through paper they get it and then goes to bed. when liegh wakes to her dad talking to her grandparents she questions him and he says that he made a promise to the mom during thier wedding and was going hon kong.
Legh gets angry at him and tells him she doesn't even know how to speak mandirin. Her dad ignores it and leaves.The grandma pulls out food for them to eat while liegh has memory's of her mom.She also thought of her dad and how he was probably at some fancy hotel with all his travel points he had. liegh goes to her room sees the bird and trys to interact with it but the bird gets startled and flys off liegh goes downstairs. A big idea I chose was memories. I chose memoirs because Leigh has lots of memories about her mom.Her mom died from a suicid On page 71 Leigh had a memory about her mom. Leight finds herself in a weird room and she remembers that it was her room when she was a kid. Letter after looking at her house she finds her mom with his dad. I think she was happy about seeing her mom. Leigh is always thinking about her mom sense then.On page 178 she had a dream that her mom is turning into ashes. Later she realizes that she has to find her before she disappears.


 
Pain
Another big idea I chose was pain. I chose pain because Leigh is always thinking about her mom. Leigh thinks her mom turned into a red bird. But her dad does not believe her. Leigh is half asian and half weight. She is trying to find clues in her family history to uncover her mother's secrets. I think she is going into metal pain and she is sad.
