These 3 women hunt and punish any mortal that breaks the natural order. Every murderer, each person that lies under oath, and all the blasphemous humans are theirs to punish. Men and woman who evaded judgment for their crimes are hunted by them.

In addition, they could fly, cry poison tears, and become invisible. Unlike many immortals, they are able to cross dimensional barriers of the Underworld, Earth, and Olympus(which was illegal to do for every immortal but Persephone and Hermes).

Clytemnestra, wife of King Agememmnon, killed him for sacrificing their daughter to the Gods. Orestes, their grown son, discovered this and killed his mother on Apollo's command. The Furies were sumoned by this breaking of the natural order and hunted him. They caught Orestes, but Apollo lulled them to sleep. He freed Orestes and told him to go to the city of Athens, where the goddess Athena would try his case. With the aid of the traveler god Hermes, they made it to Athens. Athena then tried Orestes for his crimes and heard the testimonies of Apollo, Orestes, and the Furies. Athena deemed Orestes not guilty, enraging the Furies. Recognizing the Furies were about to rain hell upon Athens, Athena offered them appeasent: they would be the patron goddessess of justice in Athens. The Furies accepted this proposition gratefully and later thanked the gods for this good fortune.
