Chris McCandless was a young man who essentially changed his identity to pursue new noble ideals that were inspired by Leo Tolstoy. His body was found in Alaska near Mt. McKinley. Some were inspired by his actions, some depicted him as a "reckless idiot."

Living deliberately means everything you do is on purpose and consciously. All of Chris's decisions was from his own will and thought that it was best for him and his journey. An example of this could be when he buried all of his belongings and even abandoned his car just to continue on. "There was a way to avoid such aggregation: He could simply abandon the Datsun (his car) and resume his odyssey on foot. And that's what he decided to do." (Page 29, Into The Wild)

In the book, McCandless makes a lot of sacrifices in order complete his mission in exploring the US. In this case, he leaves his good friend Ron that he met during his journey. "McCandless, uncomfortable with the request, dodged the question: 'We'll talk about it when I get back from Alaska, Ron." This quote represents that Chris would do anything to complete his journey, even something as sad as leaving an old friend. He was so committed that he decided he would rather go on and live by his ideals and travel to Alaska.

Chris also dreamed of this journey for a long time, this quote explains his declaration to travel all over the country. "As soon as high school was over, Chris declared, he was going to get behind the wheel of his new car and spend the summer driving across the country." His deliberation to complete this mission has existed since his childhood, which meant he was very confident and intentional.
