Mircea cel Batran (n. 1355 - d. 31 January 1418) was the prince of Wallachia between 23 September 1386 - November 1394 (or May 1395) and between January 1397 and 31 January 1418.

He was the son of Radu I and the brother of Dan I (but only after his father), to whom he followed the throne [1]. In the official documents it appears that "In Christ God, the faithful and Christ the lover and the sole ruler, Io Mircea great voivode and lord ...". In Romanian historiography he also appears under the name of Mircea the Great. [2]

During the time of Mircea the Elder, Wallachia reached the largest territorial area in its history. Mircea ascends the throne after the death of his brother Dan on September 23, 1386. He finds Wallachia in the process of development through the wise policies promoted by his forefathers and will continue to consolidate the economy, the army, the administration and the Church [18].
