Hawthorne's works belong to dark romanticism, cautionary tales that have themes related to guilt, sin, and evil. The use of dark romanticism writing would include creepy symbols and horrific themes. Dark Romantics also focus on human fallibility, self-destruction, judgment, and punishment which can be seen in his work which is why he is considered a dark romanticist.

Hawthorne would dabble in numerous genres, including transcendentalism, but he found his niche in dark romanticism, believing that all of a human's weaknesses lie in hypocrisy and suffering.

Nathaniel was best know as a novelist and a dark romantic. Some of his most popular works include "The Scarlet Letter" and "The House Of The Seven Gables". Due to his use of allegory and symbolism, he is one of the most studied writers today. Like many others, Hawthorne's works have impacted the way literature today is perceived due to his ability to link his personal sense of the past with the actual history of his region.

Within the 1800s, Salem was a retail/manufacturing hub, housing shoe and leather factories. Salem really flourished in the 1800s, still at its peak as a port city. Hawthorne played a role in this by working in the Customs House- which actually still stands today.

The Romantic period allowed people to have the freedom to express themselves through literature, visual art, and their political views. However the same cannot be said for Black people. Due to the fact that slavery was abolished towards the end of the era, Black people's ability to experience creative freedom was fairly limited. However, this limitation did not prevent enslaved people such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs from creating and sharing their own stories. The "Slave Narrative" was a common theme among Black writers in America. Despite its darkness, Black writers sharing what it was like to undergo such a cruel circumstance further paved the way for other African American writers to express themselves through literature.
