I grew up living with my special needs nephew Steven who was 5 years younger than me. I played schools with him, and loved seeing him learn and grow, even though most of the time he mumbled and grumbled! I also became his advocate on the school bus and realized that I wanted to work in a job where I could support people and help them be their best. My first job was in a very remote school and walking into my new classroom was when I realized 'This is it - I made it!'. I ultimately thank Steven for the forks in the road that lead me to teach.

I’ve always wanted to work with children from being the eldest of 4 siblings and helping look after them. I wanted to be a teacher probably from when I was in Year 6 at school. Instead of being with the rest of KS2, the Y6 block was by the infants, and myself and a friend always asked to help with the younger students at break times and in the lunch hall, we got to read with the students and play with them which was really rewarding.

I knew I was a teacher when I felt the excitement of that one child who was struggling with something and finally able to achieve it…. when stationary became exciting again!!

I spent a couple of years teaching around language centers, as a means to an end to stay in Thailand. It wasn't until I started teaching Early Years that I knew that this was a passion and more than just a job.

A few years later, I was doing an PBL project with my students. I got so engrossed in the project that for over a month that was all I thought about or got excited about. Weekends and evenings, I was always thinking of interesting ways to build on the kids' ideas. Not once did I find that time stressful or overwhelming - only excitement! That's when I knew I was a teacher.

I knew I wanted to be a teacher after having conducted my undergraduate thesis, which focused on cultural and linguistic inclusion, and representation in educational spaces.

As I dug deeper into issues affecting minority students, I felt the need to do something about it.

So, I enrolled in a masters program and got my masters and teaching certification. I became a teacher. I made it my professional responsibility to be a voice to students who do not necessarily align to schools norms.

Not so much of a fun fact: In Minnesota, where I am from, less than 3% of the teaching population is Asians. Now imagine a K-6 elementary ed male Asian teacher?

I wanted to be a teacher after working at a camp with developmentally disabled adults. I was inspired by their joy and authenticity. After that experience I thought I wanted to study special education and work with teaching children with special needs as I wanted to advocate for them while encouraging their innate curiosity. I eventually decided to teach Homeroom.

I knew I was a teacher when I connected with students' families and parents sharing that their students talked about what we were doing in the classroom at home. I was shocked and also realized that what I was doing in the classroom was impacting.

I originally intended to begin a career in some sort of international development role, and I was doing an internship with a child's right charity in Ghana. One day in the office, the CEO of the charity came to me and asked quite directly, "Adam, are you a teacher?" to which I replied, "erm no, I'm an international relations student." he rephrased the question, "but could you be a teacher? There is a local school which needs an English and social studies teacher, one day a week, can you do it?" Without too much thought, I decided to give it ago and was soon thrust in front of 53 year 9 students with only a blackboard and a piece of chalk... I wasn't always sure if I wanted to work with children but I did want to be a mental health professional. Growing up, my school counselor played a pivotal role in how I viewed myself. To be honest, she wasn't great & didn't do much. I knew then how NOT to be, and that is where I think my journey towards became a counselor was cemented. During my internship & private practice, the universe would push me towards children. I took that as a sign and started working in a school. After a week at my new job, it finally sunk in. It felt right, I was where I was supposed to be. Looking back at my life, I feel every experience I've had was in preparation for this role. My not-so-great school counselor, my supervisor insisting I work with children, and my first few clients who constantly asked me support their children. I am in ways honouring a young misguided Sridevi, who I know would be so happy to see me helping children find their way in this big big world. This is my short story.

As the oldest sibling of 5 I have been a teacher as long as I can remember. It was a long journey from being the know-it-all big sister leading “lessons” in our impromptu classroom we fashioned in the family room to research-based pedagogy for change with many points along the way where I questioned “Am I a teacher?” “Am I a good teacher?” I believe this constant reflection has been crucial in my continued development. I love the phrase “We know better, so we do better”. I love being on this continuous journey of improvement! Being a teacher is so ingrained in my self that I find it difficult to ever think about NOT being a teacher.

I didn't choose to be a teacher. I was guided by my mom and fell into this profession. I didn't want to be a teacher but I wanted to make a difference I told her. I wanted to be a retired adult (with money) doing volunteer work with students with special needs. I searched and searched with the help of my mom, we found a course for Special Education. My life changed forever after that.

I knew I was meant for it the moment I started because I value relationship building and when I connected with my students, I knew this was meant to be.

My first placement was as a one to one worker with a child with autism. He was "volatile" as other staff put it. I loved seeing his smile daily and how he opened up to me. I knew this was path :)

Yaara - At the age of 17, I was blessed to be accepted to a concurrent education teaching program that I didn’t apply to. That meant that I would go to a Canadian university and graduate with two degrees at one time, and that sounded like a good idea to me. Initially, I had my mind set on being a dentist so I could have normal work hours and $$$ to ultimately allow me to be a mom - the job I (still) want most in my life. So, to fulfill my teaching degree requirements at the end of my first year of university, I did a 10 day placement at a kindergarten. It was the most joy I had felt in a long time and had me jumping out of bed excited the work. That’s when I knew I loved teaching and being a teacher was my calling. I had been caring for kids or teaching peers most of my life so I should have realized this before but it was fate! Fast forward to the end of the 5 year program, my last placement in a Grade 4 classroom affirmed that I was a teacher. That class changed and challenged me. ♥️

My first job is graphic designer in school then my director asking me to teach media subject and I really enjoy I had a wonderful moment to shared my expertise with my students then go on and on until 23yrs. My mom has been a Special Teacher for decades now and growing up, I always said “I’ll be anything BUT a teacher" 😂

When I took some internships as a community manager I knew I would be miserable sitting behind a laptop for 8 hrs a day and remembered how fun it was for me to accompany my mom to work.

Immediately, I asked around if there were any teaching assistant positions available to see if maybe Education was my path. As life would want it, they immediately said “a teacher is leaving mid-year and the assistant will take over his job; we need a new TA as soon as possible!”. I applied to the job on a Friday and on Monday I was working. I knew that this was my field of work where I felt truly happy.

As a TA, I would cover teachers when they were absent and there was this young teacher who particularly was always absent on Fridays and Mondays 😅😂

I knew I was a teacher when the students from her class told me “Laura, have you realized that you started reading this chapter book with us, and now we are finishing it? You were our teacher this year, not Miss E!” 😅😂😅

That’s probably when I realized I had, in fact, been teaching all along ❤️

I had to learn to be brave myself, within a culture that operates through fear. I thought I could share the tools I've learned to make them have healthy self-esteem and brave too. Also, it is always nice to see kids getting nervous before a show but feeling so proud of themselves after. That void to navigate in between these moments is one of the reasons why I exist.

I realised I wanted to be a teacher when my brother started reading. I used to sit with him every day and go over his sounds and I loved watching him develop his skills. I was about 9. His teacher then asked me to come in and read with the first graders and it was then that I set my goal to become a teacher.

I realised I was a teacher when I supported a colleague of mine with a student who was struggling in class. When she turned to me, I realised I had something to share and that was a big moment for me. For a long time, I still just felt like an older student and it was then that I felt part of the teaching team and realised it was also me - I was a teacher!

I never really dreamed of becoming a teacher, but have always been able to interact easily with children, my family and friends all said 'You would make a great teacher!' My background wasn't related to children at all—I never imagined myself working with them! After finishing my degree, I worked in the hotel industry and then with an insurance company, but something always felt like it was missing, though I couldn’t quite figure out what. Then, I got a wonderful opportunity to work as a teacher's assistant at Panyaden. That experience filled the gap I didn’t even know was there. I started working as a teacher alongside experienced educators and even went on to earn my teaching license. The turning point for me was the magical feeling I got from being around children. They ended up teaching me more than I taught them, and I felt incredibly happy and inspired to learn more about them. That’s what sparked my interest in child development.

When I was in university as English major, we went to mountain camp at the school in top of Mae hong son. There are just only 2 teachers with 150 students, lack of materials, we were there as a TA volunteer. Students were so happy with their own way, teachers were like a superhero and inspired me to become a teacher.

When I was very young, my father had a good friend that was a pilot. He took me on my first flight in a little two - seater. I was 7 years old. From then on I wanted to be a pilot.

While growing up, I had a lot of nieces and nephews that were just a tad younger than me and I was the designated baby-sitter. So I got a lot of experience working with kids from a young age.

When it came time for college, I decided to be an air traffic controller but get my private pilots license. After 40 hours of flight time, I decided I didn't like it - too stressful. A good friend of mine in college, who was studying being a PE teacher suggested being a teacher.

Yes, why didn't I think of that. I change my major two years in college. Wow...what a difference. I loved it. I loved the learning and the experiences in college learning and all the student-teaching.

I have to thank all my nieces and nephews for giving me the experiences of teaching and working with kids.

When did I first know I was a teacher? Wow. I'm still learning all the time and can't really say when I knew I was a teacher. I still feel like a student. hahah.

I had opportunities to help some of my friends with their homework when I was young, and I discovered my love for teaching. In high school, I assisted my sister in running her tutoring school, where many kids faced various challenges and lacked access to quality education. Their resilience inspired me to become a teacher.
