Teachers in China command a respect that is not seen in the United States. Students are expected to never object to the instructor’s opinion. And although they may be given the opportunity to share an opinion in the classroom that differs from the instructor’s, when it comes time for the exam the expectation is that the student will recount the opinions of the instructor verbatim.
In most Chinese classrooms, students are not permitted to speak unless they are called on by the instructor to provide an answer. When called on the student is also required to stand while providing their answers.
