The creation of the piece comes at a time of Greek artistic innovation. Layering of body parts, clothing, and hair as well as the shields on the sides creates the illusion of depth and taking up three dimensional space. At the time pottery was made in workspaces with master potters and master painters working together. Exekias, creator of this piece, filled both roles both sculpting and painting the pot. The black-figure painting technique utilized slip (watery clay almost like paint) to paint the designs and then engraved finer details in the slip. Firing in three steps creates the black portions in the slip painted areas while the remaining areas of the pot stay red.

This video shows the process of creating a black-figure Greek vase beginning all the way at the collection of the clay to use to form the vase. I chose this mechanism because it allows us to visual see how the vase would be made now and very clearly explains the differences between the process now and back then. It also has very cool diagrams of the kiln that show how the three step firing process takes place.

This is a model of an ancient kiln. The different chambers were utilized to create the distinct black colored figures on the pottery. I chose this mechanism because it provides an important visual on how the pottery was fired and could be used for mock demonstrations with visitors getting involved.

This is a map of ancient Greek trade routes. Black-figure painting originated in Corinth. The spread of goods and knowledge lead to the spread of this artistic technique. I chose this mechanism because it can help us trace how the technique got from Corinth where it was first discovered to Athens where this piece was created.
