Checkoffs

We do peer feedback sheets for most skills. We then have 3 "big" checkoffs. Head to Toe assessment; medication administration (done in clinicals); urinary catheter. We are 15 weeks - 4 hours/week. Usually do lecture for 1-2 hours and then practice time after. They are to do readings, evolve videos and watch our skills videos prior to class.

Exams

We do 3 computer (50 pt) exams on content. 3 practical exams - after the computer exam. We then have 3 math quizzes and 1 final math exam - P/F.

Interest

We use a lot of stories, do lots of break time and create a laid-back classroom feel that I think they enjoy.

Usually when we are doing our lecture and through our demonstrations of skills we teach them what things to do (how to do it, how not to do it, etc) things that can go wrong, etc.

We are 15 weeks. We meet once a week for 4 hours. We have weekly peer feedback forms they have to have 2 other students check them off on the skill. We have 3 formal check offs (head to toe, medication administration - done in the clinical setting, and urinary catheter).

Skills Validations

We do 8 skills validations with instructors all require 2 peer validations prior and 6 peer validations for different skills. 12 week course-meet once a week for 6 hours (validations completed with instructors during that time) small lecture, skills demo and activities during this time. Readings & skills videos should be reviewed prior to lab every week.

Encouraged to take business outside of the lab if necessary and to not interrupt. If using phones inappropriately we use a professionalism rubric we can deduct points from if needed.

We use our Susie's and other manikins to create short simulation scenarios to work through. We change activities up each week. Also do a lot of hands on, show and tell, guess speakers and almost every week we do stations with different activity/content at each.

Bringing simulation or what if activities.

Example: Teach cardiac/respiratory assessment and now in separate groups they have to work through a short scenario by doing an assessment and asking relevant questions.

What if oxygen therapy: pull out the equipment-your client presents with oxygen saturation of 87% what are you applying and have them do it.

12 week course-only thing for week 12 is the final head to toe assessment is completed.

8 Instructor Validations (oral med, insulin admin, card/resp/BP assess, trach suctioning, IM injections, IV therapy, catheterization and a final head to toe assessment with random skill)

6 Peer Validations (sterile field and gloving, enteral tube feeding/med admin, trach care, wound care, wound care, abdominal and neuro assessment)

Student is Responsible

The student is ultimately responsible. They have to have a peer update them, work with a peer or professional tutor or whatever else will prepare them for validations. We mandate attendance otherwise we deduct for absence or leaving early and there is a penalty for missing a validation. Max class size 24 students.
