Since 2015, dozens of the Miskito people and other groups in the area have been killed, raped, and taken captive on the way to their farms. The bodies of two men from the community of Esperanza Rio Coco were also found dismembered last August. These acts of violence were done by the Mestizos in order to capture virgin land, precious timber, and gold located in the area.
