Our music video was based on the song ‘Geronimo’ by Sheppard. As we already knew about the band through the different tasks that I have done, I already had an idea for what style they were and how they come across through the medium of media which is all based on their internet website and throughout their songs and albums which are on the shelf in music stores. The form of branding is shown through the different micro elements such as cinematography and more importantly mise-en-scene which includes costume, hair and make up and location for example.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Genre

One of the ways to help brand my products was through knowing the genre of the band which I found out to be pop, rock and indie. Personally we didn’t think that the genres of rock and indie were included as part of the genre and so we specifically designed our video and ancillary tasks on the pop genre as this is the most popular known genre. However, we did remember that the band wasn’t just based on the pop genre and tried to suits all of the genres even though that a rock genre has a specific stereotype that we did not see in the band at all.

Colour Scheme

Throughout the ancillary tasks I have tried to stick to the same colour scheme of using the primary colours as well colours which match with these in a muted colour style which are less intense colours. This is definitely seen on the digipak on the front cover, back cover and CD disc as well as the poster as it has the same design on from the front cover of the digipak. This is not an obvious thing to see in the music video as the performance is quite a clean and offish white colour but the narrative has a muted yellow tint filter and well as the afternoon sun on a cold day to it which allows it to relate the digipak and the digipak poster as a muted yellow colour is used. Also some of the colours from the location such as the brown pavement, the grey stones on the beach as well as the grey bricked walls too and the use of black and white as well can all relate to the muted colour scheme which is definitely seen on all three products. I thin that these colour suit the band very well and even though it’s not as eye-catching as brighter colours, I think it will as personally I have not seen many music videos, digipaks or digipak posters which use this colour scheme.

The constant tint across the music video is the narrative creates a warm look which can make the music video look dreamy and unrealistic. The tint uses muted colours which also gives it a slight edge to the video but I think that it makes everything stand out a lot more which makes it even more engaging to the audience, instead of having normal daytime lighting. This kind of tint is rarely seen in music videos but I think that it enhances our music video and the feeling of the male dancer.

Design

The digipak and digipak poster also include the same design which definitely shows that they are working together and part of the same band. This was intentional as it allows the audience to see the poster in the street for example and too see the digipak in a shop as they would recognise the quick glace that they saw in the poster in a street. If this was not done, it would seem like they are not related in any way and there would be technically no point of the digipak poster as not a lot of people would stand and read all of it through. People would rather just take a glance and then continue on down the street for example. This photo is not featured in the music video and is not conventional to do so, but people are more likely to recognise a song if they heard it again rather than a photo. Also if they did see the music video, the song name and band name would clearly be displayed next to it as well, so they can do further research into finding out who the band are.

Costume

The costume that the band wore was very plain and simple with we thought best suite the band It consisted of a white shirt or black top with light denim jeans. Also each band member had their own little accessory such as a bow tie or braces for example. We chose this because it’s smart/casual clothing which is modern and stereotypical for our target audience of teenagers. This image is not shown on the digipak or digipak poster and so it doesn’t continue with the branding, but the digipak does feature a photo of the lead singer/lead character in the music video to signify that these products do relate together.

Location

One of the locations for the music video was in a plain white studio which looks neat, modern, simplistic but effective. Having a white background allows the focus to be on the band rather than on the surroundings which is not what we wanted to happen. Most importantly it plants all of the focus on the lead singer because as I have said before, it’s a very different music video where it focuses on a dance narrative as well as focusing on the male character in a romance/love genre. The plain white studio is reflected on the digipak and digipak poster as the background is white plain and keeps with the simplicity but effectiveness of all the products.

Font

The fonts only appear on the digipak and digipak poster, but it was important that I chose the right style to match with the genre which would also match with the music video. The font is something very important to consider for the band as it obviously also has to be readable to the audience and be placed on the digipak and digipak poster in a way that makes it easy to read and be recognised by the audience. To help me make my decision I looked on different font websites such as www.dafont.com and looked at the font that Sheppard has used already. I found out that they are quite modern and clean in a san-serif format which is simple but effective for this style of band. Once I found the font I wanted I used it on the back cover, front cover and on the CD of the digipak as well as on the digipak poster too. I didn’t use any other font as I wanted to keep it looking professional as no font looks the same and so I thought that it would be muddled if I used other fonts. The only thing I did change was the size of the font which does slightly change the look of the font anyway and emphasis the most important information especially on the digipak poster but can still be seen on the digipak too.
