Mr. Turner- In the chapter Mr. Turner is significant because he is another obstacle in the way of the rocket boys. He is trying to prevent the boys from getting a calculus class in their school. I feel he doesn't want the boys to take calculus because he is set in his ways of football is the only way to succeed, and building rockets isn't something a Coalwood boy should be doing.

Miss Riley- She was a very important character in this chapter for not only believing in Sonny, and telling Mr. Turner her thoughts, but for helping the Rocket Boys get out of trouble with the police. When the our in Mr. Turner's office it's her quick thinking that made the police realize that it couldn't of been one of the Rocket Boys' rockets.

West Virginia State Police- The police are important to the chapter, because they are the sort of road block in the chapter. They call out the Rocket Boys for a rocket, because They are the only people they can think of that would ever launch a rocket in Coalwood. In reality it isn't even the Rocket Boys' rocket, it is a flare for the airport; because Sonny had to figure a way out of the mess he was in it made for a very important part of the chapter.

Sonny wants to take calculus, but it is not offered at his school. He asks Mr. Hartsfield, but he insists that Sonny is not that great at algebra so it is not likely that he will do well in calculus. Mr. Hartsfield taunts them to ask Mr. Turner. Miss Rhiley comes along with them, to persuade Mr. Turner to offer the class. He let them know that it must be approved by the country superintendent. The next day, Mr. Turner calls the boys to his office. They are welcomed to two uniformed men, later identified as the county police. They confront the boys about a metal tube supposedly from there rocket that caused a fire on Davy Mountains. Miss Riley is able to free them from the situation, when she points out how far the area of the fire was compared to where they had launched there rocket. Mr. Turner came to agreement and said Mr. Hartsfield would offer the class to only six students. The spaces had been filled, and Sonny wasn´t offered the class because he had the lowest GPA.

Life is quite often ironic. In the book; the calculus class Sonny had worked hard to have, offered at his school, was only allowed six members. Sonny was called into Mr. Turner's office and told he wasn't allowed to take it because seven students signed up and his grades were the lowest. In the end everything he worked hard for; he could not enjoy.

Hard work doesn't always benefit you in the way you want.
In the chapter Sonny is dead set on getting a calculus class that he and the rest of the Rocket Boys could take. After he had constantly asked and did all the things he was required to do to get the class Mr. Turner and the superintendent finally agreed to offer the class to six Big Creek students. Sonny had later been informed that he could not take the class, because the max amount of students signed up and his grades were the lowest. In the end, Sonny was the one that had intentionally wanted to take the class, but because he didn't have the grades he couldn't take the class all the other Rocket Boys were taking.
